60,000 word party!

by Word Bandit
in the City, riding a Paperwing dragon with Levi. Because he's my favorite person ever. EVER.

YAY!  This is quite exciting for me, because even though I've reached 50,000 words three times, this is the first time I've ever gotten to 60,000!  *Dance party*

Actually, technically I'm at 61,000 words, but I wrote most of that this morning.  But when I was waiting for the eclipse, I wrote for about an hour.  I'm really proud because I wrote nearly 2,000 words in that hour, and that's definitely a record for me.  I don't know about you guys, but I can't usually write anything that fast :)

Anyway, you're probably ignoring this and going right to the excerpt, so I'll just give it to you now:

(Oh, and I realized I didn't even mention what story this was in yet *blushes*.  It's Powerless)

Chapter Thirty Nine

It really would have been an intelligent move to call for help. After all, at the risk of sounding cliché, two heads are better than one. And it’s always rather important to have the most brainpower you can have when you’re, at a random example, being cornered by a bunch of vicious, genetically recreated Dusk Wolves bent on permanently ending your existence. And, as I previously mentioned, I have not been making the wisest choices so far in this situation in the first place, the fear limiting my personal brainpower greatly.

The fates seem to have a death wish on my life.

Pessimistic, who, me?

The Dusk Wolf tumbles to the ground as that spindly branch relinquishes me from its grip.

Now only two hold me, and both have wolves on them, quickly approaching.

Let me stand, I command.

In response, the branches take hold of my ankles. For one terrifying moment, I flip upside down. My hair dangles downward, just out of snapping range of a leaping Dusk Wolf.

I pull myself back up, the blood rushing away from my head once more. Sliding the familiar dagger out of my boot, I slash out at the newly approaching Dusk Wolf. A thick line of vividly crimson blood pours from its black nose, dripping down its snout.

It keeps moving forward and I strike again. It moves out of the way just in time, leaping backwards from the place where, moments ago, its neck had been.

Spinning in a hurried, clumsily executed half-circle, I see the next Dusk Wolf creeping along the other branch that suspends me midair.

It lifts one of its huge paws, but I drive my knife forward, into the black pad on the bottom of its front foot. It flinches, but doesn’t retreat, still hobbling forward on its three feet.

I kick the side of its belly, taking advantage of the creature’s imbalance. It crashes to the ground.

There is no time to feel like a monster. Not even as I hear the sickening crunch of breaking bones.

The first wolf is right behind me again, howling furiously at the sight of its companion, lying debilitated on the forest floor. Forgetting all intelligent tactics, it lunges at me, teeth flashing.

My weak attempt at a dodge is no use. Its yellow eyes are locked on mine. I raise my dagger and take a steadying breath.
