Annabell woke in her own home. Her mind whirled with thoughts of the previous days. He had learned, had come out of his fogged state. He recognized her. He knew her name! She was happy and sad at the same time. Happy, because he was out there somewhere, because he was free; but sad, because the police would find him and this time he wouldn't escape.
She sat up and rested her head in her hands. Why did she have to be the one to make this decision?
A soft knock came at the door. She started. Grabbing jeans and a t-shirt, Annabell hastily dressed and made for the front door. Her heart pounded as she opened it to reveal two police officers, a man and a woman.
"Are you Meess Anniball Fosteer?" The woman asked in a southern drawl. Annabell nodded, not trusting herself to speak.
"We have come looking for your brother. We have warrants to search your house and property for him." The man next to her added. "May we come in?" Another nod.
Terrified and almost visibly shaking, Annabell followed them into the living room. "Would you like something to drink?" She asked, stalling. They shook their heads and grimly began to search her house. Dizzy with fear, not that they'd find him, of course, but fear for her brother; Annabell sank into the large gray sofa in the corner.
An hour or so passed, and they hadn't found anything. The only evidence could be Annabell's thoughts, but at the moment she wasn't being pressed for answers, so she tried to relax. They returned from her yard. "Weell Anniball, nothiing out of thee ordinaree here." The woman spoke slowly and overpronounced her words.
"We're sorry to have bothered you, miss." The man said. And they left, the door swinging lazily shut behind them.
