Chapter 2
"Calypso", yelled my mother, "you're cereal is getting soggy. I suggest you listen to that alarm clock that woke even Tania." Tania was my three-year-old sister that couldn't be woken up with a nuclear bomb.
"I'll be down in a minute," I called, agitated that I was woken so rudely. I hated mornings and the feelings were mutual. I especially hated school. I was deemed gifted by the school system and was not happy. I pitied the lower class and I hated popularity in any way shape or form. Anyways, the only reason why I went to school was because my best friend was there. She was "gifted", too. She hated popularity just as much as me. And she has known me since birth.
I headed down to the kitchen where my Fruity Pops were waiting for me. Tania was bawling and my mom was frantically rushing around trying to get everyone ready for school while my father sat, eating a bagel and reading the eNews. "Just couldn't wake up from your dream about Neter, could you?" said Azur. Neter was my crush. He was an actor/singer and his auburn hair perfectly brushed against his perfect eyebrows, accentuating his hunter green ey- sorry, I'm gushing again, aren't I? Anyways, he was in my gifted classes and was almost as smart as me, according to our test scores. Those stupid test scores.
Just then the alarm sounded and the T.V. flashed, "DRILL DRILL DRILL." We all knew it was going to happen, the attack drill. Because Aliana was a violence-free country, we had several attack threats. The farmers all had weapons just in case and in the city, we had drills every month to make sure that we knew what to do if there was an attack.
We headed down to the underground world that held everybody for the five minutes we spent every month waiting for the all clear. We each waited in our little home-shaped cubicle for the voice to come over the intercom. "You may go back up now. The drill is over."
We all crowded up the narrow stairs back onto the first floor of our apartment and took the elevator to the 12th floor, which we occupied completely. When we got there, I stepped into the light blue cylinder that did everything for us. It stripped me down, lathered me up, rinsed me clean, sucked me dry, brushed me, dressed me, and did my make-up in a matter of minutes. After that, I kissed my parents good-bye and stepped into the Transportube and pressed the button that said, "School," and waited for the familiar sucking sound it made when it whisked me away.
