Answered Prayer chapter 2

If I said I shot a man, would you believe me?

Well, you better believe me, because it's 100% true...

Many people have no intentions of violence, and neither do I, unless if I'm in a dire emergency. Defending myself isn't an easy task, because of my petite body, and being only four feet five inches tall at age twenty five doesn't help me at all.

When people in town pass me, they do nothing but say "That's Randilyn, the shy little thing. Poor girl, her parents died when she was ten, and her husband perished at war."

I never think about Alan anymore. Or my parents. I know they're still with me in heart and soul. All of their spirits are alive, I can feel it when I wake up every morning, or sometimes when I'm running to nowhere.

Back to my original story. I shot a man a few nights ago. It was nothing really, I was just protecting myself. Any other girl would do the same--I hope. Or else I could rot in the county jail. That would be a waste of the life I have left.

As usual, the rain and sleet tapping on my window woke me. My limbs stiffened as I strained to stand. I sighed. 'Another sleepless night' I thought, grabbing my housecoat, and walking outside into the night.

The sky was clear, yet rain bled from the clouds. Small droplets of sleet covered my ratty brown hair. I trudged across the lifeless patch of land I call my front yard, and headed for the town of Aston. Moist grass clung to my bare feet, restraning me. I simply laughed and kept walking until I got to the hills.

Nobody ever came near the hills of Aston. They were claimed to be haunted by spirits and fictional beasts, but I never saw such things there. That doesn't mean I don't believe in the paranormal, because I honestly do. The hills were beautiful when morning came along, full of lush grass and deer. At night, the deer retreated to the forest nearby. So, life left me alone with no one at my side.

Rain still poured itself on me, soaking me in murky water. I sat down on the grass, soiling my housecoat. The very second I set my hands on the grass, I heard two distinct shots ring through the night. At first, I thought nothing about it. But the shots came closer and closer.

My instincts told me to run away, but my body reacted otherwise. I stayed there, no matter how much my mind screamed. Voices inside my head screamed, yelled, and hollered at me to escape from the hills of Aston, but I remained content. Then a man appeared from behind me.

"Stay where you are," his voice mumbled, "and I just might spare you".

All the oxygen was knocked out of my chest, and I thrust myself back, laying on the grass. I couldn't see details of the man's face or anything of that sort, only his shadow. I locked my ankles and said nothing. My mouth was petrified; sound would not come out.

"I SAID," the man began,

In one second, I jumped to my feet, and struck the man with my straw arms. He didn't move. I gasped, gripping his arm and twisting it back with all my strength, while at the same time, kicking him in his shin. He started falling backward, trying to reach my neck, but failing. I noticed a gun lying on the grass and picked it up.

"Don't mess with me", I said as I pushed the trigger, shooting the man dead on in his chest. He laid there on the grass, with fresh red blood pouring out of him. I glanced at my hands. The gun was still in my grasp. Amazed and depressed with my inner strength, I threw the gun toward the man's dead body, and ran desprately.

I ran....and kept running.

Until I had no idea where I was.
