Prologue

Three Years Ago

He smiled a simple yet so complex smile that made my cheeks morph into a bright red hue. I watched him sit on a rock in the middle of the pond to meditate, but I knew he couldn't help open an eye and glance up at the tree that held by thirteen year old body, smile and then resume his meditation.

Golly. He is so himself. Well, he should be, shouldn't he?

But that's the problem. He is so himself that I can't help liking him. Of course, if anyone found out about my immense crush on him it would baffle and infuriate some specific people. I'm not allowed to like the heir to the throne. I can't have a crush on the Fire Lord's son. I can not be in love with Zuko. I don't have royal blood coursing through my veins therefore the phrase "Zuko and I" is forbidden. It's against the rules. But, whoever said I had to follow them?

"Zuzu!" it was Azura's voice that came from the outdoor halls. "Have you seen Min? I can't find her anywhere and her parents are looking for her! If you see her tell her to go to her room!"

But Zuko didn't respond, he only smirked and shook his head and once his sister left he leaped from his rock and walked slowly to my tree. To make sure I didn't look like a complete stalker I whipped out my journal and began writing.

"I wonder where Min could be." he said sarcastically, then gave a punch to the trunk.

"Don't hurt it." I giggled jumping from my branch and leaving my journal there.

"Sorry, I didn't know trees had feelings." he chuckled slightly. "Are you going to leave your journal up there?"

"I'm always going to leave it up there. Always. Don't you dare read it."

"Awh, c'mon, you can't make an exception?"

I thought about this for a second then I replied with a, "Ok. So, let's say you can't find me one day. Wait a week, and if I don't turn up, you can go get it and read it."

"I'm never going to read it then!" his fourteen year old voice squeaked. I laughed.

"You never know."

"Besides, I don't want you to leave. You're really cool. You're like my best friend. I don't even care if you're a girl."

"I'm always going to be with you, don't worry." I said, now turning a bit more serious. He stopped walking.

"I know you will." the smile faded from his handsome face and instead he wrapped his hand over the necklace he bought from a villager on one of our escapes and took it off. "Here."

"I can't accept this." I murmured.

"Please." he took a step closer and put it around my neck. For a fourteen-year-old he was pretty tall--or I was just too short. His expression was so pure and sincere that I couldn't help what I did next. I got so close that our bodies were touching and with the simple lift that my toes gave me I kissed his cheek. Both our faces turned bright red.

"I like you." he whispered, not meeting my gaze. For a second I thought it was a pity sentence but he quickly faced me, closed his eyes and our lips met. I was too surprised. I didn't even have time to close my eyes and enjoy it. It was so--puzzling. It was against the rules. Not only the ones his father put but the ones that had to do with our age.

He departed from me, his cheeks more than a bright red--it seemed as if I could bake cookies on them--but I didn't look at him for too long because he had already made a run for it. I stood there though, confused and melting on the inside. Had that really just happened?

"There you are, Min! We've been looking all over for you!" my parents came from behind me making me hide the necklace quickly. I turned to face my parents, bowed but once I looked up, it was strange what I saw. They were carrying few bags with what looked like clothes and food.

"What's going on?" I questioned.

"We're leaving." my father said, not meeting my gaze.

"Why?" my bottom lip was trembling.

"Because we're airbenders." he said simply.
