A/N: This is the trilogy (And a prequal, I guess) to "Without a Trace," or also known as the "Homicide"  collection.  This is the Dead Flowers Trilogy, explaining Detective Lily Kara's hard life before she became a detective with Caden Chase.  So please, everybody, enjoy this very sad tale.

Black Lily                              by CL Strain, Chris Cromer, and Cody Beyer.

Prologue

She was crying again.  It wasn’t the first time.  Nor the last.  Her mother had just died.  To be honest, I was almost as shocked as she was.  She was my best friend.  I guess she didn’t have the best of luck, after all.  But, what shocked me is it’s not fun to lose your mom at the age of eight.  I would have known. My dad died a year ago, when I was eight, too.  Not many people know the, horrible, gut-wrenching experience to have one of the people closest to you die at such an early age. I hugged her tight.  Her dad was in his room, but I could hear him crying, even though he was up-stairs.  I couldn’t help but cry, too.  It was sad.  Alyssa, the most loyal, best, funniest, and greatest friend ever, shouldn’t have this happen to her.  My dad had gotten hit by a drunk driver, but her mom… She was just found dead in the floor of her kitchen.  Nobody knew what had happened to her.  Yet.

I let go and asked her if she wanted to go for a walk.  She said yes, so we quietly opened the front door, put on our jackets,  and walked down the street.  The street-lamps illuminated our way as we wandered through the neighborhood.

“Lily?” Alyssa asked quietly, “Was it this hard for you when you lost your dad?”

I nodded, and replied, “Yeah.  I’m afraid so.”

I saw a tear drop to the ground.  I hugged her.  We were like family.  One, regular sized family.  I kissed her forehead.  The words It’s going to be all right, kept bounding through my head, and I wanted to say them, but I just couldn’t.  I didn’t want to lie to my best friend.

It was late that night, around midnight. My mom had called me home just a couple of hours earlier. I was lying in my bed, tears barely being held back from dripping.  I missed my dad now.  More than ever. Dad was always there to comfort me when I was down, sad, or mad.  But he was gone, and, quite frankly, Mom doesn’t have the same effect.  I wiped the tears out of my eyes, then sank my head into my pillow.

Then, muffled, I sobbed.  Not just for my dad, but for Alyssa’s mom, too.
