Chapter 12
Cameron
Eventually (yes eventually) I could move my arm and I was all healed up. The guys and I met up at Vanessa's again. It had been a few days since Bella's wedding and Bree was back at work again.
"Miss me?" she asked. The guys weren't there yet so I was by myself at our usual booth. I didn't know how to answer that question.
"Uh..."
"Well, I missed babysitting you," she said. I blushed. Trisha giggled like a little kid. I shot her a glare and she shut up almost immediately.
"Do, are you going to Forks High School? Or is Carlisle like sending you to some private boarding school in, like Scotland?" I asked.
She squeezed my nose. "No, silly, I'm staying right here," she said.
"Owb," I said. She let go."Well, pretty soon, school's gonna start up," I said.
"I know," she said. "Too bad we won't be in the same class."
She was right, we wouldn't be in the same class. I was a full year older than she was.
"Yeah, bummer," I said, trying not to show how really bummed I actually was.
"You want a Coke?" she asked.
"Sure," I said. Bree disappeared around the corner and came back with my Coke. I guzzled it down as the guys pushed their way inside.
"Hey, hey, hey! Look who's back!" Elliot said. Richard had one arm around his new girlfriend, Jessica and she was whispering something in his ear. He smiled as they slid into the booth next to me.
"Oh, Cam, I had no idea you had a girlfriend!" Jessica said.
"Hah, Bree's not my girlfriend," I said.
"Yet," Brent said, sitting across from me.
Bree rolled her eyes and took our orders. She came back with our food and then bustled around serving other tables as the regular Tuesday lunch-goers streamed into her section.
"Wow, she's pretty," Jessica said.
"I know right. Cammie won't admit how lucky he is to have such a pretty girl so close to him," Elliot said.
"Tell me about it," Trisha said, sitting on the edge of the table.
Brent threw a French fry at her. She caught it in her hand and ate it, slowly. Then she stuck out her tongue caked in mashed fry and waggled it around. "Scram, squirt!" Brent snapped at her. Samantha giggled.
Trisha got up and walked away to a seat in another section, eyeing us as she walked.
"So, how's it between you two?" Elliot asked. Elliot was almost never jealous, until he met Bree Cullen.
"Elliot, you need a girlfriend," Samantha said. "Have I seen her before?"
"Who cares, she's hot," Brent said. "In fact, she's so hot; she's as hot as hell." He burst out laughing.
"Thanks Brent," Bree said, swishing past our table. Brent blushed.
After the restaurant cleared out, I drove Bree home. She was quiet and I was quiet. It was awkward silence and until we reached the Cullens' place, it stayed that way.
"So," she said.
"So."
"I've been meaning to tell you something," she said.
"Shoot," I said.
"You like me, right?" she asked.
I blushed. "Sure," I said.
"Like, like me," she said, leaning close.
"I-I guess," I said.
"What do you mean, ‘You guess'? It's a yes or no question," she snapped.
"Yes," I said.
She smiled. And then, she leaned over and kissed me, right on the lips. Not like before, which was quick, a peck. This lasted much, much longer. My head started spinning from lack of air and as I pulled away to catch my breath she kissed me again. I had to keep pulling away and she kept yanking me back. So I took Brent's advice. "If a girl kisses you enough, stick your tongue in her mouth." It was dumb, but...
So I tried, pressing my tongue against her lips. Bree jerked away hard and fast.
"Oh, sorry," I said. I had totally forgotten about the whole venom thing.
"It's okay, don't do it again. I don't think you should become a vampire until it's completely necessary though," she said.
"Right," I said.
We stared at each other. "So, did that mean anything?" I asked.
"Yeah, it means I like you back. I like you back, a lot," she said. She kissed me on the cheek and then got out of the car leaving me sitting there, watching her disappear into her house.
Bree
I couldn't believe myself. I had really just kissed him, right on the face. In the mouth. Not like last time, like really, really kissed him. Bella was laying on the couch, just like she had been for the past day since she got home last night. Her face was paler than usual and she still had faint scars where Edward had given her bruises (please, don't ask). Her eyes had dark circles and she wasn't even a month pregnant yet and her stomach was swollen.
Rosalie was sitting in front of Bella and Edward was sitting next to her. Edward almost always looked like he was either depressed or in pain. Now, he looked worse. I felt ad for the poor guy. It was never his intention to make her pregnant! It was never his intention to hurt her or even fall in love with her, let alone go this far. Poor, poor Ed.
Despite the light in the room, it felt dark. Rosalie's eyes darted towards me in seconds. "Where's Alice?" I asked.
"Here!" Alice said, skipping down the stairs. She grabbed my hand and dragged me up the stairs. "I saw it all happening, before it happened and through my window. You almost suffocated the poor boy," she said when we got to her room.
"Well, that's not exactly the first thing you think about when you have no need to breath air," I said feeling guilty now that I had almost killed my pretty-much boyfriend.
Alice laughed. "Oh, Bree," she said. "At least you get to go into highschool with a boyfriend."
"Yeah, at least," I said.
Winona
I waited for Seth on the beach, in cat form, wondering if he would notice it was me. I must have dozed off because when I opened my eyes, I was on someone's lap. I jumped off, shifting in mid-air.
"Wolf-boy!" I said, realizing it was him. He half-smiled at me.
"What do you want to do today?" he asked.
"I don't know," I said.
"Ever been cliff-diving?" he asked.
"Have I?! I love cliff-diving!" I squealed. I remembered the times when I would cliff dive with my brother when we were little and my mom wasn't looking. I was always older than him. But I hadn't been cliff-diving since he died doing it without me there.
"Great, because I know this great cliff and-. What's wrong?" he said.
"Oh, nothing, it's just the last time I went cliff-diving was by myself after my brother died. That was the day I found out I was a shape shifter. I tried to commit suicide," I said.
His mouth fell open. "Why?"
"I don't know, I guess I felt like it was my fault he died," I said.
"Oh, well, then, I think we should refrain from cliff-diving until I'm sure I can make sure you don't kill yourself," he said.
I laughed. "Oh, Seth," I said. I sat next to him and we watched the waves. "Tell me you story," I demanded.
He looked at me than said, "Seth Clearwater, I was born here, raised here and I'm fifteen years old. I've never had a girlfriend, never been kissed by anyone but my mom. I just recently had my transformation. Good enough?" he asked.
"No," I said.
Seth
"Well, what do you want from me?"
"Detail, Seth Clearwater, DETAIL!" Winona shouted, shaking my shoulders.
Yes detail.
"I don't have to add detail to my excruciating boring life story! Tell me yours," I said.
"Fine," she said. And she began.
"When I was born, my mother named me Winona Jane and when I was three, my little brother, Isaac was born. He and I were inseparable. He loved me and I loved him. We never fought. Ever. When I was 6, my parents decided they didn't like living in Georgia, going to the same places, seeing the same house every day. So, they bought a big RV and stuffed us all in it and drove upstate. We drove all over the U.S. twice between the timed I was six and nine. I loved it. But, there was always something missing, like I never had friends.
"Once, we stayed in Yellowstone two days and my brother and I tried cliff-diving. It was amazing. The second we were going to do it, I got sick and he snuck out and went by himself." Her voice cracked.
"He hit his head on the way down and no one knew where he was because my parents were out at the grocery store and I was in bed. He bled to death, as well as dying from the heat. I cried so much when I learned he'd died. A year later, we came to another cliff. I attempted to kill myself, only the wound I inflicted healed too quickly. My father died shortly after and my mother got depressed and we moved into an apartment. I ran away after that, hiding my secret from my mom and learning later that she had slit her wrists after I left.
"My life was miserable after that. I stole, I drank out of streams, and I was a real delinquent for a shape-shifter. And then I ran into Carlisle and Bree. My eyes change color, I've never been kissed, let alone had a boyfriend, never really had a friend."
Intense. Maybe I could be your first boyfriend... Her eyes were brimming with tears. I hugged her. I never really showed sympathy to the crying girls in my life except my mother, but when Winona cried, it was different.
"I shouldn't have asked," I said.
"Nah, it's fine," she said into my now tear soaked shirt.
"No it's not! I haven't even gotten in the water and I'm already wet," I said.
She laughed. I realized how warm her body temperature was at that moment, at least about 20 degrees warmer than I was. Her tears could've evaporated as they hit her skin if they didn't feel like they were fit to boil as they were.
"Stop crying please," I said. Don't say that!
"Sorry," she said.
"No, I mean cry all you want but you're making me wanna cry," I said.
She burst out laughing. She wrapped her arms around me. "You are probably the single-handedly most awesome best friend I've ever had to myself, ever," she said.
Good enough, I guess.
