chapter three
Willow didn't know where she was. Her whole body shook with fever, and she couldn't seem to move her legs at all. "Just rest now, Willow." a voice mewed softly. The cat was skinny and white, with glinting red-brown eyes. Willow felt something cool on her forehead, and she didn't protest it. "How are the others?" She asked in a raspy, labored voice. "They went on ahead. We will make up the time in a few days. First you must regain your health." came the reply. Willow allowed herself to settle back onto the pavement. She felt safe at least, for now she did. And in a few days' time, they would joing the pack again.
Suddenly, there was a loud bang and the sky flashed blue and white. "What?..." The other cat asked, her ears pricked. "Fireworks?" Willow breathed. "They're sending a message." the other cat nodded, facing the bursts of color. "Cat... lost... storm... on... way....! Willow, we have to go. I'll carry you or something. The storm is right behind us. If we stay here, we die." Willow glanced at her face. How? she wondered. How would they escape the storm? The other cat stretched under her and Willow felt herself rising into the air. They set off at a run, Willow gripping her savior's shaggy coat with outstretched claws. Behind them, thunderclouds rose and swelled like enourmous dark balloons.
Wham. The other cat stumbled, and fell, out of breath. Willow struggled to stand, but she was too weak to take more than one step. "You go on." Willow hissed. The cat shook his head stubbornly. Willow advanced slowly on him, her teeth bared in warning. "Go." she rasped. The cat was smaller than her, but even with his kitten-like figure he could probably ovetake her. Willow persisted until the cat raced away. Then she stretched out on the pavement and waited for the storm to reach her.
