in your dreams
They'd got done with math class, and Hazel picked at her eraser with boredom, and some content. The snow was still falling silently, drifting away and away; some sticking to the window like souls sticking to the Earth; some piling up on the window sill. She sighed, and stared out, watching the faded, sun-washed gray sky reflect on the wooden pane. Suddenly all was silent, and all she could hear was the distant ticking of the clock—like time ticking away, like everything disappearing. Of course, this was described as “more time we’ve been at school, less time we have till we go home” in Hazel’s mind.
Jake was sitting next to her, tapping his pencil lightly on his desk, and listening hardly to their teacher’s ramblings. He tapped the pencil louder, getting all the boredom out on the class. It was barely noticed when the teacher called his name several times.
“Jake, can you tell us what the capitol of Florida is?” she urged. “Jake? Jake…oh, Jake…Earth to Jake! What is the capitol of Florida?” Ms. Livvie banged the desk with a fist.
Jake simply moved slightly in his seat.
“I dunno,” he mused. Ms. Livvie looked hotly at him, standing to the front of the class.
“Well, boys and girls, this is why you should study,” she lectured. Jake flickered his gaze to her for a moment, but soon retracted it and stared at his feet, hiding a yawn behind his palm.
“Now, Jake, think hard…capitol of Florida!” said Ms. Livvie. But Jake, poor child, wasn’t listening at all. He relied on somebody to tell him the question.
“Capitol of Connecticut, Jake!” a hushed whisper sounded. Jake nodded. It sounded like Hazel! What a reliable friend.
“Hartford!” he answered confidently. The class bursted out in laughter, turning Jake a bright pink.
“N-no, Jake, not Hartford. Tallahassee was the answer…”
He groaned, and hid his face in his arms until lunch, where he caught up with Hazel. She was chatting with Cady, who seeing Jake, chuckled softly and trolled away. He huffed, glaring at Hazel.
“Haze? Why’d you give me the wrong answer?” he spat. Hazel looked dumbfounded.
“I-I didn’t! That was Dora,” she answered innocently. Jake nodded sarcastically.
“Sure, it was, Haze. Sure it was.”
Hazel sighed, shaking her head swiftly. “No, Jake, I’m serious! You’d believe your best friend, right?”
Jake bit his lip. “Fine. I believe you.”
…And it was settled.
