A Day in The Life of Hazel Kamalachi; Chapter 7, Mystery Crash

in your dreams

The snow fell daintly on her hood, sliding off occasionally. She rang the doorbell, freezing her fingers off. The cold numbed her hands, her cheeks rosy--her toes aching with frost bite.

It'd been 20 minutes and Jake hadn't opened the door. Hazel rang it again, but this time yelling.

"Jake, please open up!"

She looked up at the window, three inches of snow piled softly on the window pane. The sky was color of a smokey sun, reflecting off the window. Suddenly Jake's face appeared in it, and he opened the window, shoving all the snow off it so it landed on Hazel's face.

"Jake, what'd I do?"

Jake simply glared at her.

"You know what you did," he mused angrily.

Hazel groaned. "No, I don't, so if you don't mind telling me--"

But he was gone. The door swung open, Jake's content face staring an inch away from hers.

"Listen, Hazel, I know you're with Cady and all that. So, if you don't want to be my friend, just come out and say it," he said.

Hazel's mouth dropped open, and she shoved his face away. "Who in the world told you that??"

Jake smirked. "Like you don't know. Zoey!"

Hazel's heart dropped. She searched for the words inside her mind, but none came. Simply, she shook her head, furrowing an eyebrow.

"Zoey! How..how could she?"

Jake frowned. "You see, Haze, there's the liars and the honest. I used to think you were the honest. Times change...apparently," he added, staring at her.

Hazel didn't know how the words came out, or where they came from, but either way she'd wished she'd never, ever asked it.

"Do you like me?" she said. Jake stared at her more, and bit his lip.

"W-why?" he asked, looking nervous.

"Umm..no reason."

Jake looked like he was about to nod, but in the middle, shook his head so quickly.

"Oh, good, because I thou-" Jake cut her short.

"LOOK OUT!" he yelled, grabbing her by the shoulders and pushing her out of the way, but unluckily for her, she landed face first on a rock, and no sooner she'd landed someone scream.

But it wasn't her.
