Chapter One
One week later
“C’mon! Let me go! Let me go get Cindy back!” I pleaded to the federal agent on the other side of the table.
“I’m sorry, Tucker. You’re just too valuable.” He replied calmly.
“Then what about another agent? Couldn’t another go?” I asked, though I knew that was going to be a “no” too.
“I am sorry, Tucker, I truly am. All other field operatives are busy.”
“What about Al? He just got off a mission. He’ll have a week to snatch her and return!”
“Al got a mission this morning.”
“You guys REALLY don’t care about kidnapped fellow operatives, do you? How can you be so calm? This is my PARTNER we’re talking about! Not some German dog!”
He sighed. “Not only is she your partner, but I hear you two are dating nowadays.”
I was surprised at that comment. How had he known? I slammed my forehead against the cold steel table as hard as I could. I felt blood trickle down. As I was about to do it again, the agent caught my head.
“You are NOT going after Cindy. Is that clear?” He spat in my face.
“Yes sir, pain in my as…” I stopped, knowing cussing him out wouldn’t get me anywhere, then finished, “Butt.”
He stood up, walked out of the room, and then slammed the door behind him. I grinned. I’d gotten him to leave my sight. And since when have I been good with rules?
I had packed four sets of clothing: Stealth, two pairs casual, and a blood, glue, and mud stained PT shirt. I picked up the small bag with extra rations, a cantina of water, my clothes, and the few belongings I had, including my iPod, and a DSi.
Then I snuck out the door, without a sliver of evidence.
