A.N: The farm house and the farm itself is based on the farm we own. :) So, I felt like writing something and I came up with this. I hope you like it! Comments appreciated!
Chapter 1
Abri glared at Kayla as she stepped out of the taxi.
“You’re late, cousin,” Abri growled.
“Am I? Well I am most certainly sorry,” Kayla said sarcastically, not feeling sorry at all. Abri bit her lip so hard she could feel blood and turned sharply and stomped into the farm house, in hope that she might be able to get away from her cousin. But her plan failed as her Grandpa bumped into her.
“Abri, go back and help your cousin with her luggage please,” Abri’s Grandpa said, calmly. Abri turned around once more and walked back outside. She didn’t say anything but picked up Kayla’s big red suitcase.
“Hello Gramps,” Kayla turned to Grandpa, greeting him in what seemed to be a fake cheerful voice.
“Hello, Kayla. As soon as Abri has showed you to your room, she will show you around the farm.” Grandpa said. Kayla smiled sweetly and followed Abri into the house.
“So, what do you do for fun around here? Pick up the cows’ manure?” Kayla snorted. Abri gritted her teeth, but decided to ignore Kayla. She threw the suitcase into a small, tidy room. Sun filtered through the blinds shining on the faded turquoise bed. Flies buzzed around and the room was hot from the afternoon heat. There was one small table in the corner with a vase of dull looking daisies. A chest of drawers stood against the wall next to the bed; it looked old, dusty and unpolished. Kayla sniffed in dismay.
“What’s the matter? Is this room to pathetic for you?” Abri asked, mockingly.
“Slow down, hot shot. If you can live in a house like this, then so can I,” Kayla replied. Abri took the rest of the luggage from Kayla and dumped it next to the red suitcase.
“So, what other exciting room do you have to show me?” Kayla said. Abri said nothing but began walking towards the back door, Kayla all the while following her.
“It’s late, go to sleep,” Abri told Kayla. And indeed, it was late. Outside the crickets buzzed and the moon shone brightly.
”Aren’t you going to show me around?” Kayla asked.
“I don’t have to if I don’t want to. You can get around this place by yourself, can’t you?” Abri snorted. Kayla didn’t reply, instead she walked straight to her room and slammed the door.
Kayla’s father had sent her to the farm he had grown up on as a child, expecting her to enjoy it just as much as he had. But Abri and Kayla had never got along. Abri was a farm girl and Kayla was a city girl, it just didn’t work out that way.
The following morning, Abri woke up early. It was only then that she realized she had left the cows out for the night. She sat up in bed and rubbed her eyes. Then she pulled the covers off and jumped out. She washed her face, dressed in a long sleeved checked shirt and jeans, pulled on her riding boots and brushed her teeth. She then decided to see if Kayla was still asleep. She left her room and walked through the kitchen and then walked down the passage way until she got to Kayla’s door. Opening it, she peered in. Kayla stared back at her. She was awake. Abri felt a little embarrassed but shook it off.
“I’m going to herd the cattle into our nearest corral, they need some fresh hay. you can stay and eat breakfast.” Abri said.
“I want to help you herd the cows,” Kayla demanded. Why did she have to be so difficult??
“Fine, that is, if you know how to ride,” Abri said.
Kayla looked a bit nervous but quickly nodded. “I can ride,” Kayla lied.
“Hey girls,” Grandpa said as he appeared in the passage way.
“I have to pick up some stuff in town, I’ll be back in about an hour.”
Abri nodded. “We’ll round up the cows while you’re gone. Kayla, get dressed quickly if you want to come. There’s no time for breakfast.” with that she walked outside to the stables and waited for Kayla. Eventually Kayla walked down the porch steps looking groggy. Abri wasted no more time, she saddled her favourite horse, Firefly. Firefly was a big, beautiful, dappled mare. Whilst Abri was preparing Firefly, Kayla just stood against the stable wall, watching her. Finally Abri lost it.
“You’re not going to make me saddle your own horse, are you?! If you wanna ride, you have to know how to saddle a horse,” Abri shouted. Kayla shrugged, grabbed a saddle and picked saddle a horse the colour of honey-brown. The horse she had chosen was Trent. Abri watched as Kayla attempted to saddle Trent, and couldn’t help laughing.
“What’s so funny?!” Kayla was mad now.
“You’re doing it all wrong,” Abri pushed Kayla aside and finished the job off for her. Abri then climbed upon her own horse, and waited for Kayla to do the same. After 5 minutes of struggling and frustration, Kayla finally managed to climb up on Trent.
“This saddle is so difficult,” Kayla complained.
Abri shrugged and clicked her tongue before riding off ahead of Kayla. Kayla tried her hardest to get Trent to gallop next to firefly, but with her knowledge of riding it was hard.
“Need me to slow down?” Abri snickered.
“No, I’m fine.” Kayla growled. Ignoring Kayla, Abri pulled Firefly’s reins and commanded her to stop.
As Abri waited for Kayla, she looked at the magnificent view. The mountains were covered in shaggy green grass, the clear river sparkled and the sun shone down on all, making it look even more glorious. Abri moved her attention to the cows, who were mooing loudly. But something was wrong, Abri could feel it. The cows seemed nervous and not one of them were standing still. They were all prancing about, and running around the place like mad cows. Kayla finally managed and trotted up next to Abri.
“Something’s wrong,” Abri said.
“Something’s very wrong.” Abri galloped towards the cattle off not once stopping for Kayla.
