Chapter 5 Jeff, I have A Confession To Make. . .
“Livia, you wouldn’t happen to know how to break something that’s not so good to a guy that likes you, do you?†I asked that day as
my sister walked in the house from her Pet Sitting job. She’s 19 and
looks exactly like me, sandy blonde hair with glistening blue eyes.
“What? Having trouble with Bradley again?†she asked setting her
purse down on the kitchen table.
“Yeah, right. No, I’m having trouble with this guy named Jeff. He
has this MAJOR crush on me, apparently, and I don’t know how to break it to him that he’s not right for me and that I have a crush on his best friend!†I explained.
“You know, I think I may have a solution.†Livia began. She walked
over and sat on the couch. “You see, whenever you say something bad
to a guy that might hurt them they will always act like they don’t care, usually, and I can tell this guy Jeff will likely be one of those boys.â€
“So? What do I say?†I asked, confused.
“Well, you definitely want to tell him the truth, so lying is out of
the picture, you could right him a letter, but usually it has more
meaning if you tell it to him face-to-face.â€
“So, would I say, ‘Sorry Jeff, I know you like me and all, but I like someone else, and he happens to be your best friend.’ and then leave?†I asked.
“Yes, that would be what I would do. You will still hurt him, and
he may be mad at you and his best bud for a while, but soon he’ll
forget all about it and like someone else. I see it happening all the time.†Livia assured me.
“Thanks, sis.†I gave her a slight hug then went upstairs to do
homework.
That next day I went up to Jeff at the beginning of school. Boy did
he look surprised to see me! His cheeks turned a bright pink!
“Uhhhh, hey Jeff.†I replied, smiling.
“Uhhhh, hey, June.†He said shyly.
“Listen, ummmm, I know this will sound a little awkward and all,
but, it would never work out between us.†I started. Jeff’s slight smile immediately turned to a frown. I looked out of the corner of my eyes and saw Freddie peaking out from behind the hall corner. I had called him last night telling him what I planned. “Please don’t ask how I found out - but, I just want you to know that, I already like someone,†at this I saw Freddie flinch, “and, he happens to be your best bud. See yah.†I quickly turned around and walked off. I passed Freddie and whispered in his ear, “Your turn now.â€
In the two classes I was with Jeff in he would never talk to me let alone glance at me. Freddie met up with me at lunch and told me that Jeff wasn’t talking to him either. I explained what my sister had said but I don’t think it really helped, since, I guess he was one of those guys, too.
“So, are you and Freddie finally together?†Deanna asked as I sat
down at the lunch table.
“What? Deanna, why would you think that?†I asked.
“Well, you’re always talking to him and you told me earlier today
that you had called him last night.†she replied taking a bite out of her pizza. “And, you said you couldn’t tell me why.†She added with a twinkle in each eye.
“Oh, no, we’re not, but I sure am enjoying that he’s talking to
me.†I explained.
“Right, well, let’s hope it lasts.†she said. Then we ate the rest of our lunch in silence.
