There goes another short minded loser bolting their gigantically large head against the door.
“DO IT AGAIN!”
“It’s GOTTA open sometime!”
I couldn’t take it any longer. Their voices were getting clearer: one sounding like the preppy little cheerleader voice I hate so much, and the other with the voice of the Wicked Witch of the West.
“Maggie, Layla, STOP IT!” I cried furiously, bolting out of the corner. Was I their voice of reason? Apparently. When it really mattered, it’s really hard to control two seventeen year olds when you’re only twelve.
“C’mon, Kyra! You’re NO fun!” Maggie whined.
“Yeah. Help us open the doo-oor!” Layla sang. She tried to bend the bars of her jail cell.
I rolled my eyes. “You’re such a whimp,” I told her, “Do you two wanna get out of jail or NOT?” I shrieked at them, dangling their cell key close to their heads.
The sight of the key made their eyes glisten with lust. Layla attempted to shove her freakishly large hand through the bars. “You’ve got the key!” she squealed. No matter how much I wanted Maggie and Layla to rot in that jail, I began to push the key through the lock, only to be interrupted by footsteps. I shoved the key in my pocket, and took a few steps back from the jail cell.
“Think fast! A guard’s coming!” Maggie pointed out.
“…And that’s why I changed my name to Tangerine.” I said to Maggie and Layla. Hey, everyone should have a cover story.
A man stood behind me, and placed his hand on my shoulder. “Visiting hours are almost up, little lady.” I knew by his gruff voice he was my uncle Doug.
I sighed. “I’ll be out in 10 minutes tops, okay?” I said to Doug, turning around to face him.
“I get it. Tangerine. I’ll leave you and your two jail bird sisters alone.” I began to think Doug didn’t believe my cover story. It didn’t really matter, because the next day he’d find my sisters gone.
“Bye, Doug.” I said calmly as he walked away. Before I took the key out of my pocket, I checked both ends of the hall. Nobody.
“Okay, here we go,” I sighed, “Remember the plan?” My two sisters dumbly nodded their heads. I took the key out of my pocket, and quietly unlocked the door. “Follow me.” I told them, covering both of their mouths with my hands. The three of us finally approached a vent on the wall. With my hands still over Maggie and Layla’s blabbermouths, I opened the “lid” of the vent.
“Climb in. It leads you right out.” I said. Layla stood there reluctantly, but eventually climbed in, leg by leg, arm by arm. She disappeared into the darkness.
Maggie crossed her arms. “There’s NO way I’m crawling into a cruddy vent with this miniskirt on.”
“Um, yeah you are. If you wanna see Todd again.”
“”TODD!” Maggie squeaked at the mention of her boyfriend with that hideous cackle of hers.
“You are obsessed!”
“Am not!”
“Are too!”
“Am not!”
“Guys! SHUT UP AND GET YOUR BUTTS DOWN HERE!” Layla yelled.
“Fine! Whatever.” Maggie glared at me.
“Let’s go.” I groaned.
“Maggie, you should be nice to me. I’m breaking you out of jail, remember?” I said to her as she placed her right foot in the vent. She sighed.
“I guess.” she muttered.
“THERE THEY ARE!” I turned around and saw a group of security guards running toward us.
“Maggie, go!” I whispered.
She scrambled into the vent as fast as she could (which wasn’t very fast, she’s a little clumsy). I then thought, ‘oh my gosh, I’m going to be the one arrested now!’ I made a split second decision to save myself.
“GET BACK HERE!” I screamed into the vent, hoping it would help cover up.
The guards ran up to where I was standing but Maggie was already gone. I put on this whole freaked-out sister show about how one minute they were there and the next they were gone. It wasn’t hard to act shaken; I’d just broken two idiotic girls out of jail!
