October 3, 1893

As I signed my name for the billionth time today, I looked up at Henry, who was watching over like a hawk, making sure I signed every little thing I had been fined for. Thank God he didn’t know about a few taxes I had forgotten to turn in.

“I think that was the last one.” He said.

“Thank the Lord.” I said, flinging my fountain pen across my room. It hit the opposite wall and exploded, black ink dripping down the wall.

“That would be the eleventh pen this month you’ve managed to destroy.” Henry remarked. “I haven't an idea how you manage to do so.”

“Fine, I’ll clean it up.” I rolled my eyes, leaving my seat for the first time in hours to grab a rag from beneath the sink. Once I had thoroughly soaked it, I had run over to the growing splotch on the wall and slammed it on. A hollow sound happened. I hit the wall again. The hollow sound was again heard.

“Henry, bring the broom over here quick.” I shouted to Henry.

“Are you going to finally clean up the dust that has accumulated in this apartment?” He asked suspiciously.

“Just bring it over, Henry.” I grumbled. Once I had it in my hands, Henry watched in shock as I lifted the broom like I was about to play cricket, and swung it as hard as I could at the wall. A large cloud of white dust exploded out, then fell to the ground.

“Oh dear. Breaking a fountain pen wasn’t enough, was it?” He said sarcastically.

“I heard a hollow sound and I wanted to investigate.” I stated plainly.

“To you, investigating means trashing an apartment wall, doesn’t it?”

“In this case, yes. Now, let’s see what we have here.” I said, putting my hand inside the hole, which wasn’t large enough for me to fit in. I didn’t feel anything.

“Give me the broom back.” I told Henry.

“You are raving mad, Charlotte Steckler.” Henry handed it to me, and a second later, dust was flying. This time, when the dust had cleared, a hole big enough to crawl into appeared.

“I’ll be back.” I shouted over my shoulder, getting down on my knees.

“Charlotte! We have to turn these in!” Henry yelled.

“There is a time to turn in boring papers, and there is a time to begin on an adventure. Right now is not the time for boring papers.” I explained to him as I disappeared into the darkness, his protests fading into the distance.
