Greetings.

I have decided to create a horror contest. I have not read something that has truly scared me in a while. Most horror I have seen in books has been…clichéd. “The monster comes out from the graveyard…” or “The kids were trapped in the haunted house…” et cetera.

I want something fresh. Something new. Something truly spooky. I want to be scared.

Can you do it?

It is a challenge.

Here is the prompt:

Your character is in a dark place. He/she can hardly see a thing, but he/she can tell there is a little girl in a white dress a few yards away. What happens?

You do not have to use those exact words. It is a prompt; merely for inspiration.

Guidelines:

  • It may be something you already posted
  • Be original. Do not be…overdone.
  • In must be turned in by March 30th
  • You must post the link in the comments
  • It may be something you have already posted
  • It may be anything but a poem or a song although you may incorporate a poem or song into your story
  • You must follow the prompt

General tips:

  • Description makes a horror story. Use description.
  • If you do not use contractions, it tends to seem less natural as we use them all the time.
  • Create an intriguing title or first sentence. If I want to read more after the first sentence, that is a good thing.
  • Cliffhangers are good.
  • Again, be original.
  • Who said you had to write in first person?
  • It’s a good idea to use big, fancy words or words that are not normally in your vocabulary.

I will judge you on:

  • Creativity of plot
  • Originality
  • Descriptive use of language
  • Vocabulary (this is not a large portion)
  • All around impression on your story
  • How well you follow the prompt

Prizes:

First Place—Dracula:

  • Ten comments on anything of your choice
  • A recommendation on the story of your choice on my autobiography
  • A free custom bookmark
  • A book review on a story of your choice
  • A recommendation on the story of your choice on my next posted story

Second Place—Horror Master:

  • Five comments on anything of your choice
  • A recommendation on my autobiography
  • A free custom book mark

Third Place—Storyteller:

  • Three comments on anything of your choice
  • A free custom bookmark

These people should carry these titles with great pride—they will have earned them.

Good luck.
