6. Lies, Hope, Death…

The fire cackled as Seth pushed another stick into it. He sat back, watching Gweniever glare into the fire, like it was her enemy, her foe… Seth tried to ignore it, but couldn’t. Fire was Seth’s best friend… and why she disliked it so much made no sense.

Besides, she was too far away; anybody could see she was shaking. Seth unbuckled his cloak; tossing it at her. She ignored the throw and let it fall onto the ground. Seth rolled his eyes.

“Fine…” Seth mumbled. She snatched the cloak as he bent over. “Make up your mind! I’m sore..." Gwen rolled her eyes, draping the cloak across her back. She felt a little more warmth, but not much. Seth watched her with amusement.

“You can come closer to the fire…” Seth noted.

“I have no wish to go near it.” She replied coldly. Seth shrugged and she turned her glare to him. He shifted, obviously uncomfortable, but he managed to keep her eyes from his. “Jerk.” Gwen stood and Seth caught her arm as she was pushing herself up. She looked to him.

“What was that…?” Seth asked, warning filling his voice. Gwen wiggled free.

“You’re unbelievable. You ruined my life, you are taking me who knows where, my boyfriend was making out with another girl AT MY FUNERAL and I am left with no answers. That’s what.” She quickly began to storm away.

“You could have gone back! You could have told them you were alive and I had stolen you out of the castle!” Seth yelled back. Gweniever turned on her heels, Seth standing to meet her. Gwen brought herself up until their noses were practically touching. Seth’s face softened and so did Gwen’s. “So why didn’t you?”

Seth’s voice had calmed considerably. Gwen sighed.

“Because I don’t belong there… I never did.” Gwen turned again but Seth still had her arm. She let herself look over her shoulder, slightly, eyeing Seth out of the corner of her eye.

“Let. Go.” Gweniever ordered. Seth obeyed, however reluctant and watched as she walked over to the blanket he had laid down for her. She laid on top of it, pulling the second blanket over her body. She pulled her pack up for a pillow, going back to glaring at the fire.

“Fine, fine… picky, picky, picky…” Seth decided to reply after a moment. She didn’t look away, or change her expression in any way.

“You told me you were taking me to my ‘real’ dad.” Gweniever noted as he turned. He smirked, and then grimaced turning to her once more.

“Yeah, what about it…?” Seth mused, sitting down by the fire.

“Do you know him?” Gwen murmured in a quiet voice, hardly loud enough for Seth to make out.

“No… I’ve never even talked to the man and he sent word to me through a letter handed to me by a goblin, of course I’ve met him!” Seth retorted. Gwen sat up.

“Well… do you know him well?” Gweniever rephrased. Seth shrugged.

“Well enough I guess. My dad was one of his ‘best friends’ during the war that went on when we were both infants.” Seth closed his eyes, trailing back to what his own father had told him.

“What about my mom? Is she…” Gwen stopped herself. Her face, once bright, now showed disappointment and frustration.

“She’s fine.” Seth lied. Gwen’s face showed relief. Seth sighed. Why did he do that? He knew that Gweniever’s mother was dead… so why lie about it. Why get her hopes up?

“What does she look like?” Gwen asked, her voice dreamy, as she no longer glared at the fire.

“Um…” He thought. He had seen a motion picture of her mother once, but couldn’t seem to remember much about it. “Pretty… I only saw her once. But she has brilliant green eyes and brown hair, I can tell you that.” Seth watched as her face grew happier, but he couldn’t seem to bring himself to telling her that her mother was dead. Something about that angry face… it was something he knew. When he had figured out that his dad was dead… he would have given anything for someone to lie about it to him. To keep that thought of his dad, alive and well, in his mind.

He couldn’t take that away from somebody else. After she was silent for a moment, he stood, walking to his blanket. “Get some rest. We have a long ride tomorrow…” Gwen nodded, laying back down, looking up at the stars. Seth watched her, amusement flickering in his eyes, along with sympathy. He spotted Gwen’s eyes shut for the 5th time and looked away as they didn’t open back up. He looked up at the stars wearily. He could only hope that they would bring him sleep as well…
