Chapter 8

I stepped lightly through the door. When my eyes had adjusted to the dim light, I saw a sort of throne room. Sasha, Ben, and Emily were clustered in a corner. As I looked around, Lissy stumbled in behind me.

"You. Boy." Came a deep, cold voice from way above my head. I instinctively looked up. But all I saw was the high, arched ceiling decorated with white-and-gold wallpaper showing scenes too far away to see clearly. I realized that whoever had spoken had thrown their voice. Or maybe they just had a really good PA system.

"Boy! Come here!" Commanded the voice, this time from. I walked uncertainly forward, toward Emily and the others. A man with a twisted, scratched face regarded me closely. Set into his throne thing were lots of glittering stones and jewels. I realized Lissy was following silently behind me, taking care not to step on my heels. I stared right at the man. He stared back. Then he lifted his serpent-shaped staff and everything went black.
