When I stepped out of the helicopter, smelled the ocean air, and witnessed the beauty of Hawaii for the first time, I was overjoyed. I would live here. My heat beat with greater speed, and I closed m eyes to take it all in. There were a few squawks overhead, and I looked up to find a flock of sea gulls diving after a smaller prey. The sky was enormous, or so it seemed, and the most brilliant color blue. Dotted with speckled clouds, it made the scene like a painting.

“How do you like it, Maddie?” My father’s voice broke me from my trance. His ruffled brown hair made him look like he was meant for the scene, and so did his flashing smile.

“ I-it’s beautiful!” I stuttered. I couldn’t believe we’d live here. A clean, cool breeze cooled me off when I took a step.

“Let’s go see the house!” My mother said calmly, though her wide blue eyes were full of excitement. We nodded in reply, and we headed out of the open airport. Sand as soft as down made a patting sound as we walked on to an oncoming beach, where people my age were hitting a colorful beach ball across a volleyball net, and laughing and shouting. I couldn’t help but smile.

It looked like fun to play on the beach right now. But, unfortunately, the reason we’d moved here was to help out with my dad’s job. He was an archeologist, working for a business that finds “buried treasure.” Real treasure, like pieces of gold and artifacts, not candy in a piñata. That’s what most people think of when I tell them. The cool thing is, though, I get to keep what I find. So far, there’s a collection in my room with a piece of a real pearl, and a small coin. I haven’t been finding much lately, though, so hopefully Hawaii would be different than Texas. Anyway, I’ll find out tomorrow.
