Chapter Four:
Quietly, Aimee closed the door behind her and went to sit beside Claire, who had started crying again. She put her arm around her and said “What’s wrong?”
“What isn’t? You were taking so long in the bathroom. Abby and I came to check on you. Then there was that horrible blackness and the next thing we know, we were in 1775! Trevor said he heard us scream, but when he knocked on the door, nobody answered, so he came in and the next thing he knew he was standing right next to us. Oh! I’m so glad I found you, though,” she blubbered quickly.
“Where’s the other two, Trevor and Abby? What happened to them?” Aimee asked hesitantly, worried something beyond belief had occurred.
“A strange man came first and grabbed Trevor, yelling something about never leaving his side. And then a teenage boy came up to Abby and said ‘Where have you been? Mom’s worried out of her wits! Come on!’ and then he grabbed her and pulled her away!”
“So, you have no idea where either of them went?”
“Not at all,” Claire answered in a tiny voice before she began to sob harder.
“Shh, shh, it’s all right. We’ll find them. Don’t worry,” though Aimee’s words had meant to comfort Claire, even she had a hard time believing them.
The girls sat a long time in silence. The only sound that was heard was the crying moans breaking from Claire’s chest. When Claire finally quieted into just a whimper she asked “What are we going to do? How will we find Abby and Trevor?”
“I don’t know. But I’ll think of something. In the meantime I guess we’ll just have to keep our eyes peeled. Maybe we’ll get lucky again.”
No sooner were the words out of her mouth than she heard Mary calling for her. She quickly turned to Claire and said, “I’ll be back as soon as I can. And don’t forget to look for Abby and Trevor.”
Claire nodded and gave Aimee a quick hug just before she turned to the door and hurried out to meet Mary and return home in the horse-drawn carriage. The ride home was similar. But Aimee just couldn’t stay in the present; her m
She was in the middle of contemplating this when the carriage suddenly stopped. She looked out of her small window and was surprised to find they were already home. That trip was shorter than she remembered. Maybe it was the same and she was just too lost in thought to realize how long it had really taken.
She got out slowly, barely aware that Randall was holding her elbow to help her out. Once inside the house, she headed to her room, but was stopped abruptly when Mary asked “How was your time with Claire?”
“Good,” was Aimee’s short answering.
“What did you do?” Mary questioned.
“We just talked. Not much of anything but it was fun anyway.” Aimee was trying desperately to escape to her room.
“Well, good. I’m glad you had fun. You should go to bed; we do have church tomorrow after all.” Mary said, ending the small talk finally. Aimee practically ran down the hall and up the stairs to her bedroom. Once there, she slipped into the same wool nightgown she had taken a nap in earlier that day. She pulled the covers of her bed back and snuggled into her bed. It wasn’t exactly the Temperpedic mattress she had back home, but it had an oddly comforting feel to it, or maybe it was just the fact that she had found one of her friends already. For whatever reason it was, she fell asleep anyway.
Just Abby and Trevor now. She thought just before she drifted into unconsciousness.
