The Runaways

Chapter 1: Rim

I looked at the brilliant moon in front of me. I checked my watch, 11:54. Rim should be here with the other Runaways.

"Iris," I felt a soft touch on my shoulder. I turned around to see Rim.

"What?" I asked. "Moona wasn't there." Rim replied.

 "Oh no, I will go find her. You get everyone in the boat. Don't leave without me." I told Rim. 

"Yes," she replied. I turned around and ran to the woods.

 "Moona! Moona!!" I yelled. I ran back to the campsite. No sign of her, just a failed fire, and a collapsed tent. I checked my watch, 11: 56. I needed to find Moona, fast. Then I heard a loud howl, then a high-pitched scream.

"Moona!" I yelled pushing the bushes out of my way as I made my way to Moona. The ground was spotted with foot prints blurred by the running of the person who made the prints. I burst out into a small clearing, a large wolf stood over Moona fangs closing in on her neck. A picked up a rock and threw it at the wolf. It pierced its skin making it collapse. It wasn't dead, just injured severly. I ran up to Moona and grabbed her.

 "We have to run," I yelled. In two minutes we were at the edge of the cliff. I glimpsed at my watch, 11: 59.

"Jump!" I yelled grabbing Moona's hand and we jumped. The wind whipped our hair up as we fell.

Then we crashed into the frozen water, it swirled around us threatning to take us down. I broke the water gasping for air.

"Where is the boat?" I questioned Moona but she wasn't there. The boat wasn't to be seen.

 "Their DROWNING!" I screamed to myself. I plunged down and searched the water. I spotted three bodies, Moona, Tria, and Rim. I swam to Moona and pulled her to the shore. I gasped for air and then dived back into the water. I snatched Rim and Tria's hands and pulled them to the sandy shore. Moona was breathing!! I jumped back in frozen, I spotted Aulin and grabbed her limp body. I stared around and found Kur. I grabbed his hand and pulled them to the shore. 7 more, I thought. Even though I was getting hypothermia I jumped in and grabbed Gale and Pete.  5 more, I said reassuringly.  Rick, Em, Ari, Trya, Now just Jousha. I jumped in and dived deep grabbing the limp body of Jousha. Then I blacked out.     

I gasped for air and my body started shaking voilently.

"She is alive!" A booming voice screamed.

 "Now we need to help Rim!" another booming voice shouted.

"Stop," I whispered, straining my weak body. 

"Get her a jacket, she is dying from hypothermia." a voice yelled. My eyes opened to Moona  wrapping a jacket around me. We were all on a beach, some lying down, others franticly helping the ones lying down. I sat up and looked around, I spotted Joshua.

"Moona, what happened?" I questioned.

"Well, you saved everyone but Joshua and you started drowning. I jumped in and saved you. Everyone's alright, all except for Rim."

"Rim?" I asked.

 "Yes, she isn't breathing. We believe she is dead." Moona said tears in her eyes. I clambered over to Rim's lifeless body. Aulin was standing over her, crying.  I pressed Rim's chest, trying to perform CPR. I didn't work. I tried again. Nothing.

 "Dig a hole," I commanded Aulin. She crawled to an empty place in the sand and started digging. I clambered up the beach to the trees, I grabbed a bunch of pink flowers and leaves. Everyone else was digging a hole for Rim. I set the flowers and leaves in Rim's dark hair.

"Done Iris," Aulin told me. Tears filled my eyes as I lifted Rim into the hole. I stared at her for the last time. Her dark brown hair fell around her round face her blue eyes were still open, her lips apart.

"Fill around her with sand except for her face." I said sobbing. I crawled back up to the trees and grabbed more pink flowers and more leaves. I grabbed a huge tree leaf and a large stick. As I waited for everyone else to finish covering Rim, I used the stick to write: Rim, RIP, 1999-2011. I set it on the small sand bank by Rim's head.

"Finished," Moona replied. I set the flowers and leaves on top of Rim.
