Powerless excerpt! (Yeah, yeah, you know the drill =])

Yay!  I got to 40,000 words today!  Huzzah!  Especially 'cuz that means I wrote over 4,000 words today!  YAY!

Random thing that wasn't worth it's own post- if you haven't already noticed, I'm not on KidPub quite as much anymore.  It's only because school starts tomorrow, and I'd rather get some serious writing done before than stare at a screen waiting for a comment.  Anyway, yeah, I won't be on as much, but I'm not disappearing or anything :)

Anyway, I'm going to post an excerpt that's longer than the others, so here it is!

A few red uniformed attendants are hunched over the panel. Some are staring out the window. None see the two figures creeping out the side door.

Coal shuts it gently behind us. “Now let’s see what they were looking at…”

We move around the side of the train and I stop dead in my tracks.

My first thought is of giant bears. But when I look closer, I realize that that’s not what they are. Black as midnight. Immense as elephants. Long tusks that curve threateningly out from their lips. Long tails that flick impatiently. And emerald eyes that shine on their dark faces. They stand across the train tracks, making the route impassible.

They’re cats. Big cats. Saber tooth, fearsome, disturbing cats.

“What are they?” I whisper.

“I have no idea,” Coal says.

The man, the tall one in the suit is standing in front of the beasts, sizing them up. He takes a deep breath, and unleashes a show of immense Aara power, ripping flashes of wind around the creatures.

They only snarl and move closer.

Coal is poising herself to run towards the battle. I catch her arm.

“Are you insane?” I hiss.

She shakes her hand free. “He needs help. I’ll be fine.”

“Stay away! Listen to your friend!” The Aara shouts. But the cats are closing in around him, their pointed fangs glistening in the midday sun.

Coal hesitates. But one of the creatures raises a paw the larger than my head, and she’s darting towards it.

Flames burst from her hands and wrap around the monster, scorching its fur. It howls in rage and pain. Two others snarl at Coal, and leap towards her. But one other sees me, for the first time.

I can only imagine the thoughts beating through its simple mind.

New target. Run. Reach. Kill.

I take a few steps back as it bounds towards me, landing only a few feet away. I can see its black pupils, the thin slits, from here, swimming in that sea of jade.

My head whips around of its own accord, quickly observing my surroundings. We’re still in the meadow. But now it doesn’t seem tranquil. It seems barren. There are no trees.

Help! I call, hoping against hope that I may have missed a tree. I didn’t.

Now all I see is a black paw, claws extended, reaching towards me.

I pull away, but not fast enough.
