Chapter 1
Sewing = Suicide
~~~~~*****~~~~~
Location: Germany, Arendsee
Year: 1941
Elsie’s POV
     I sat; a needle in my hand and a dress draped across my lap as I rocked back and forth in my mother’s rocking chair. “This is suicide.” I muttered, glancing at the fabric, then back at the shiny weapon in my hand.
     “What was that?” My mother eyed me wish suspicion. I looked up at her nervously.
     “Oh-I…I was just saying that this is… wonderful.” I lied, looking down quickly. A person could always tell if I was lying, that was if they looked into my eyes.
     “I was pretty sure the last word started with an S…”
     “Nope, Ma, you know how I am with speech!” She snorted, standing from her seat next to the fireplace and stopping the record.
     “You’re done for today, now rush and do your chores.” I threw down the needle and dress with haste onto the other chair and bounded out of the living room into the open blue sky.
     The cold breeze that whipped through her hair felt outstanding compared to the heat of the fire inside. I never understood my mother, lighting a fire in the middle of a day, then stitching up clothes for the rest of the day meanwhile ignoring the yells and playful shouts of her children.
     She had been so closed off since the beginning of the war, two years ago. The Second World War they were calling it, though I didn’t have enough perspective to see why. Our population and town was small compared to most towns throughout Germany, we were almost sitting by and watching it pass.
     I still wasn’t sure what the World War was about, even though my parents made me sit by the radio for hours and listen to the updates on how Germany is winning. I knew part of it had to do with Jews, but then again, I never really listened.
     I have been a German ever since I could remember, or at least that is what my parents told me. I had long wavy blonde hair that curled at the ends and cut side bangs that reached around to my ear. My eyes were an ocean blue and my body structure was also German. I was proud to be a German noting we were considered by our current military leader, Hitler to be a ‘superior race’ and from the way I saw it, the Jews were retaliating saying that they were better.
     Oh well – who knows. I didn’t care, or at least I didn’t care yet…
Yeah - but trust me - I read
Yeah - but trust me - I read that when I was 7 and I dont remember a thing from it except there was a girl and her brother died and the people she was staying with called her pig, but her 'dad' taught her how to read a book about digging graves and she stole books. But no, this is going to be nothing like that.
I am going to post a paragraph about this book and you can look at that and judge on it.
