Chapter 51
Egan beat his wings furiously, striving for more speed. Blood dripped from his right wing, but he surged forwards anyways, ignoring the pain.
He's spent hours waiting in the trees, expecting the Alliance's men to show up at any moment.
When he finally realized they weren't coming for him, a new, terrifying thought occured to him.
They were going after someone else. Someone dear to him.
"I'm coming, Diane!" he screamed, letting the wind rip his words away.
He sliced through the air, gritting his teeth against the pain as he pushed harder, moved faster. Tears stung his eyes, but he didn't slow down.
Finally, the house came into view. He dove towards the ground, landing on the hard ground in a rolling crash. He lay still for a few seconds, catching his breath. Then he lept to his feet and tore into the house, throwing the door open with a bang.
"Diane?" he shouted. "Diane!!!"
But he was too late.
The house was empty.
"No..." he moaned, falling to his knees in front of a knocked over chair. "Noooo!!!!"
Tears streamed down his face.
"I'm sorry! I'm so sorry!"
He gasped, choking on his tears.
Maybe she's still alive, he thought, getting up shakily. Maybe.
The last thing Egan wanted to do was to walk straight into what was surely an Alliance trap.
But if there was a chance of saving Diane... Well, it was a chance he was willing to take.
"I'm coming, Diane!" he shouted, stumbling outside.
A trail of crimson blood followed Egan as he took a running start and lept up into the air. A scream of pain was ripped from his throat as he beat his right wing down hard, but he didn't slow down.
"I'm coming Diane! Even if it kills me!"
Which it probably will, he thought to himself.
But he needed to know that he'd tried.
He'd had enough of giving up and running away.
Egan was going to face this.
