Chapter 57
Diane watched in terror as Egan was bound and gagged, then thrown roughly to the ground next to her. She tried to meet his eyes, but he wouldn't look at her.
When he had handed himself over to these horrible men, she had wanted to shout and scream to him that he should leave, that she would rather die then be the cause of his death.
But the gag had kept her silent. And now, there was the possibility that they might both die at the hands of these ruthless people.
"You know, you remind me of your little friend Noah," the first man said, approaching Egan.
Diane saw Egan's eyes widen. She knew that Noah was one of the members of Team Forever, the team Egan had given up.
"Ah, surprised, are we? You are not the first member of your team to become involved with the Alliance, Egan," the man said, pacing lazily in front of his two prisonners.
Egan's eyes widened further, and the look of helplessness and fear in his eyes made Diane want to cry.
"Yes, you see, Noah was involved with us for... personal reasons. He was a valuable member, really. Then he found out that you had joined us... and he didn't seem to like that idea."
The man leaned closer to Egan, smiling.
"He had some sort of idea about protecting you, wanted to stop you from joining us... but you were so promising! A boy with wings, a boy who had dared to defy Gorron! We wanted you more than we wanted Noah. We couldn't have him turn you against us... so we had to kill him."
Egan began to fight against the ropes that bound him, a wild look in his eyes.
"Oh, you didn't know he was dead? I suppose Gorron and your team didn't exactly keep you up to date after you broke your oath," the man said, clearly enjoying himself.
Egan fought harder, his eyes taking on an animal look. His shoulders shook as he worked his wings.
The first man backed up a few steps, frowning.
"Are you trying to escape?" he asked, and a cloaked man appeared out of the shadows, holding an axe above Diane's head. "You know what happns if you escape..."
But Egan wasn't being rational now. His animal side had taken over, and even the calm, collected man who had been taunting him moments before began to look a bit worried.
Suddenly, with an inhuman roar, Egan's wings burst out, tearing the ropes. The roar itself seemed to have ripped the gag from his face.
"Amazing," Diane heard the first man whisper. "Those ropes were twice as strong as the last time we bound him... and his wing was hurt! He's truly amazing. Perhaps I shouldn't be so eager to get rid of him..."
Then, louder, the man shouted, "Come back now, Egan, or this axe will fall!"
The cloaked man at Diane's side hefted the axe above his head as Egan flew straight for a hole in the roof, letting another animal cry rip from his throat.
Diane squeezed her eyes shut. They were going to kill her. But Egan was going to get away.
That was all that mattered.
