Gale~~~Chapter One: Flying Monkeys and Apricots

Walking through my Mom's hometown wasn’t my idea of fun. Looking at the people practically starving wasn’t exactly what I wanted to see. if I have learned anything in the past I have learned that nothing goes as planned. I was walking through the streets of district twelve and I saying to myself never to come back here again. Of course I had a job to do and nobody would get in my way.

“Please,” Begged a little girl, “Give me some food and I will re-pay you with a goat.”

“I don’t want a stinking goat!” I said. It came out a little mean but I didn’t care…I was mean and I wasn’t going to stop doing what I was doing for a little girl that wanted food…my sister would’ve stopped but I wasn’t my sister I was someone quite the opposite. A good friend of mine lived in the seam; he was a trouble maker just like me. He wanted me to steal some food and bring it to him, I arrived at his tent this morning and he insisted me to get him food. I nodded and here I am walking the poor streets of District Twelve. I looked around the poor section and spotted a girl around my age walking with a basket of bread…I knew she was the one.

“Hello,” I said stepping in her path, “That basket looks awfully heavy, I’ll hold it.”

“No thank you!” The girl said evenly.

“My name Is Gale,” I said holding out my hand. She didn’t shake my hand she held the basket with a strong grip, as if she knew…

Without even thinking it through my dumb brain I shot out my hand to grab the basket but she wouldn’t let go people would do anything for food.

“Help!” she screamed, “I’m being robbed!”

A boy slightly taller than me ran out a old abandoned warehouse and he and I played tug a war for quite a while. Without warning someone came behind me and wrapped his arm around my neck….putting pressure. on it. He was practically choking me.

I let go of the basket and the last thing I remembered was everything going black.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I admit I thought I died and went to hell. I felt so horrible and where I was at was as hot as hell. Suddenly I felt this burning sensation my eye lids shot open and I was staring at a big, muscular man. The burning feeling was my arm on fire.
“Please,” I begged, “Don’t kill me.”
I was screaming the fire was burning my arm…it hurt so badly.
“Tell me who you’re working for!” The man shouted.
“Please just put it out!” I begged looking at my arm.
“TELL ME WHO YOU’RE WORKING FOR!!” The man shouted.
In order to survive I had to spill the beans.
“Jack!” I said, “Jackie Moore.”
He ran over to his small but very tidy kitchen and got a bucket full of water. He ran back over to me and poured the whole bucket of water on me. The fire slowly died. I looked at my arm it was burned so badly. The man gave me a look of sympathy and walked over to his kitchen and got a rag and some medicine.
“Where am I?” My voice began to crack.
“Not the seams,” He said, “We’re at merchant!”
I nodded. The merchant was where my Dad used to live it was in a better part in District Twelve. The man started to apply the crème on my burn.
“Who are you…?” The man asked.
“Gale Mellark!” I said.
“Ah, Mellark why does that name sound so familiar…?”
“My Dad is Peeta Mellark….ring a bell?”
“PEETA!!” He shouted, “He was my best friend growing up.”
I forced a laugh.
“Really….?” I said, “My Dad actually had friends!”
“He was very popular,” The man said, he put out his hand, “My name is Greg Forman.”
“Nice to meet you,” I said.
“How’s he doing…?” Greg asked.
“He’s fine, we’re living in District one with my Mother and Sister!”
“District One is mighty fine!”
“My Mother put up a fight when my Dad made us move there when I was only three, he insisted it was safe.”
“No district is safe!” Greg said, “Who’s your Mother…?”
“Katniss Everdeen,” I said.
“Whoa,” Greg said, “She’s was a cutie back then, I’ve always had a crush on her.”
“She’s my mother,” I said evenly, “That’s gross!”
“Whatever you say,” Greg said.
“Gale,” He said, “That’s a very uncommon name, why did your parent’s name you that…?”
“Was that a compliment or an insult…?” I asked.
“It was a mere compliment!” Greg replied.
Silence
“They named me after my Godfather, Gale Hawthorne.”
Greg’s eyes widened.
“Just as I thought,” He said rummaging through his pockets.
“What…?” I asked. “What are you looking for?”
“Here,” He said taking a gold coin out of his pocket, “Get transportation back to District One, a friend of Gale’s is certainly not a friend of mine.”
“But…!”
He pushed me out of his house, leaving me injured, cold and lost.
