Chapter 10
Good News, Bad News
Adam walked over to his Mom, trying to ignore his Dad’s absence. “Mom,” Adam muttered. She looked over at him. She shook her head almost too quickly. “I’m not going to stop this fight now, especially after…” but then she shut her mouth just in time for something. “Who? What? Is it Dad?” Adam asked, definitely feeling bad about what was happening. Was it Dad? Adam stared at her face, trying to find the thing that could give it away. But she had no such face. Adam was still panicking. He looked over at the vampire family. Jewel’s Mom and Dad were still together. However, how come not Adam’s? He thought of positive possibilities. Appointment? Meeting? Wait, Dad didn’t work in a company. Darn. Well, he could still be asleep. No, he doesn’t sleep late, even on weekends. Alright, how about…a…
He stumbled over a horrible thought. He looked at Mom. Then, he was not sure whether or not to demand the truth. However, he just blew into his ring, and disappeared to his house.
Jewel was waiting. She was fully dressed now in a long skirt: red. “I got bad news for you, Adam.” She said. Adam knew this might piece together to my Dad. However, he didn’t jump to a conclusion. He walked into the house, and took a seat on the couch. Jewel handed him some papers, a letter. She had already ripped it open.
Dear Adam Johnson,
We are terribly sorry of the event today. During a war, your father…
Adam swore his heart stopped that very second.
had been severely injured by a cannonball shooter’s incorrect shooting. The man was fired, and your dad was sent to the hospital. However, it was too late.
Adam stared blankly at the page. He kept reading, not sure whether or not to cry.
We are sorry for this loss. He was very important in this war. His passing will be mourned by many soldiers. The objects in the next documents were what he left for you in his will.
Sincerely, The US Army
Adam didn’t even look at the new documents. He cried. Cried hard. His dad was gone. He had been a great dad before the war began. He was awesome at all times. He loved his Dad. He continued crying for a couple minutes? Hours? He gave up finally and looked at the documents. There were tons of things Dad knew Adam liked. They could retrieve everything from the bank as soon as we were aware. There were my game stations, some furniture: some more luxurious furniture. That was nice. But Adam saw one that made his jaw drop. He gave us my favorite toys, that weren’t too much of a biggy. But…he had given them…his humongous car!
Adam stared at the paper. He called over Jewel. She looked at it, and smiled. “I can attach some flawless mechanical wings. I’m good at that. I can also add a foldable sail. That way, all I have to do is make it waterproof and impact-proof. That will work out in different ways.” Adam looked at her. “Can you drive?” she looked back. “Yes.” She said, as if it was very common for a 10 year old girl to know how to drive a car. “License and what not?” Adam asked. “Yup.” Jewel replied. Adam stared at her. “Wow.” He muttered. Then, they stared at each other. Finally, Adam gave up and broke into laughter. They decided to go retrieve the things that very second.
Jewel drove quite smoothly. The things in the back didn’t bump a lot. Adam sat in the front. Adam saw that Jewel WAS a good driver. She drove at a fitting speed. How in the world did she reach the brake? “Well, I have an extendable leg, you know.” She replied. Adam jumped at her reading his mind. She didn’t do that a lot. He smiled at the new furniture. Their house was way too plain without better furniture and wallpaper.
They set to work on the whole group of furniture first. They moved their couch closer to the wall. Another was put next to it, and another one near the other end, facing the wall. They put the new covers on, exchanging the useless things. Then, they put the new furniture like a lamp stand and lamp near the bed, and put the other 52” TV. It was nice with all the new things: their place seemed tons better. The only problem: Jewel didn’t really win at video games. Adam enjoyed it when he beat her for the 18th straight time. He laughed; she did a very sharp punch into his gut.
