Chapter Sixteen
Otto struggled to loosen the chain around his leg. What Otto had realized when he hit the water was that the weasel could not swim. Luckily, the chain had been fastened to his leg, it had not been locked. Otto took a lot of energy trying to reach down and move his paws through the salty water. He tried desperately to pry the iron manacle from his leg. He swallowed water as he gasped for air. The water started to darken. His vision was starting to black out. His strength was rapidly fading away. He used his last ounce of energy to finally force his leg out of the chain. His vision was ninety-percent dark when he finally made it up to the surface.
Christian ran out of Sahlstromnod and onto the beach where about thirty woodlanders and about ten vermin lay dead on the sand. He searched frantically for his friend who had been with him as far as he could remember. After about fifteen minutes of searching he knew that he had no chance of finding him. He sat on a rock right at the edge of the ocean his paws in his paws. He knew that there was a chance of Otto living since he didn’t find him on the battlegrounds. He went back to the stronghold. Christian came through the large fortified gate and into a room called the entry hall. He went up two staircases and walked down the hall to his room.
Otto floated on his back to save energy. He was extremely lucky that he was able to land in front of the caravels, even though there was a chance of being run over by the ships. He had earned only enough energy to climb the small grippers up the side of one of them to hide himself in a lifeboat. The lifeboat was poorly made with no seats or oars, just a tarp over it to keep it from getting soggy. Otto checked to see if anyone on deck was looking. When he saw that nobody was, he slipped into the tiny boat.
Rufus had already noticed that Otto was gone. He didn’t want to cause panic so he had kept it to himself. Rufus came into Christians room without knocking. When he saw Christian on his bed, he said, “Come with me, I need to show you something.” Christian followed him out of the stronghold, into the vast Carnelian Forest, and into a small area where sunlight could beam in without a tree blocking it’s way. In the middle of the tiny clearance lay the biggest book Christian had ever seen! “My great, great grandsire’s father found this area. He was the very first Dog Lord of Sahlstromnod. He was a Saint Bernard dog from the other side of the ocean. He had built the stronghold with only twenty gophers that he had found in the forest, and his mate. We had found many other dog breeds on this side of the ocean and each male of our line had married a different species of dog. Just saying, but I have blood from Saint Bernard, sheepdog, wolfhound, poodle, and Akita. I am now known as a Setter. My great, great grandfather’s father, Lord John I, named the Carnelian forest because on this very spot, he used to mine the carnelian gem. My father, Lord Nixon once came with his pickaxe and shovel when he was a young pup to get some carnelian for his father. He came here only to find this laying closed on the ground. He started to read and read and every day for a half season, Nixon could be found reading on the ground. As most dogs are when they were young, Nixon used to be mischievous. When Nixon finished the book, you could barely find anything wrong come out of him. When I was young, I was puzzled when my father told this story. However, when I was older, he showed me the place. When I read it, I could understand why he had changed so abruptly. He had realized what a bad pup he was. I can show you a part where you would find a cure for sorrow.” He closed the book so that he showed the cover. It read, Holy Bible.
