Chapter Two

the day wore on and soon passed quickly, Claudia now brushing her teeth in BROI’s noisy communal bathroom after a 3-hour long quiet reading session with Nathan outside until it got to dark to see any of the words and as usual the weather in England wasn’t too pretty at night the majority of the time in October. She rinsed and spat groggily, slipping her feet into the comfort of slippers, a worthwhile change to the splintery wood flooring which Mrs. Sullivan never bothered to laminate. “Costly,” her remark. She walked down the hall and passed by the BROI Community Notice board, stopping to see if anything interested her:

Claudia tore off one of the six notices for the Pet Show off the board and wrinkled her nose in thought. She wasn’t very socialized and would do anything to meet pet lovers like her (She was pretty sure Jessica wasn’t one considering her favorite piece of clothing was her mink coat) and at the same time was wondering what Sadie could do in the show. Her main talent was simply to sleep, and that didn’t help at all. Yet Sadie was well trained ever since she was a puppy since she found her on the streets and Mrs. Sullivan let her keep her under a few conditions. Claudia had owned Sadie for 3 years now and she was her next best friend besides Nathan. Claudia walked up to the mini computer lab after the staircase had cleared of all the children in their pajamas had cleared, sat down in front of a computer, repeatedly pressing its keys to turn it on since it was so old it was hardly responsive anymore. After minutes of frustration, she finally reached a online search, typing in “beginner dog tricks”. After a while of reading and judging what things Sadie would deal with well she settled with a “Half-Human Dog Show” including Sadie shaking hands with members of the audience, Claudia holding Sadie’s front paws and helping her to “walk” on her hind legs, Sadie dressing up in clothes Claudia could get from the local pet shop she had walked by many times before and stopped to look at the items inside, and once in a while, got something nice for Sadie which was rare since she rarely had much pocket money due to her not-very-good-saving skills. But luckily at the moment Claudia had been saving up for a new tee shirt but now this sow felt a little more important to her. She logged off and turned to the notebook she brought along with her and copied the steps to teaching the tricks for Sadie on it, alarmed when she saw that the hallway light had switched off already, meaning she should have been in bed ages ago.

“Shoot!”

“Nathan?”

“My light burnt out.”

“I suspect you’re reading a mystery?”

“Sherlock.”

“Aha. Elementary. My dear W- Nathan.”

“SH!

“What…?”

“Sorry Claudia, I heard Mrs. Sullivan walk down the opposite staircase.”

“I see, I’ll whisper. Well, I bet she wouldn’t like me falling asleep on the floor.” Said Claudia with a yawn.

“Yeah… you can head back to your room. Night.”

“Night.” Claudia whispered coarsely as she walked to the other end of the hall, opening a door that read ROOMS 110- 120, walking in and opening her room marked 112, surprised by Sadie jumping into her arms. Claudia scratched Sadie’s ears then collapsed on her bed sighing contently. She got up and grabbed the stiff window latch, turning it in frustration until the whole window was rolled open. She leaned out of the window, breathing in the fresh air and reaching out to pull a leaf from the tree that enjoyed batting its knobby branches against the window to make noise, as you would know. Claudia’s peace was interrupted with the rumble- like noise of a plane landing since BROI was situated close to the airport, central station and main highways. On this plane were two men smartly dressed; each had brought only briefcases along with them with high security locks and they spoke in distinguished American accents. What no one knew but the two of them is that in their briefcases, every document had these words: NYSHI, 2-MONTHS OF AGE, BROI.On arrival, these two men went through a security check- when asked why they were visiting England, they merely answered “Judging…. at a community event.”
