Chapter Five

It was the morning after the final interview, and the weather was freezing. It was the first morn of winter. In Caden's opinion, the perfect setting for a day like this. He was thinking up his newest novel. Dry Ice. Or maybe Blue Blood. His thinking got interrupted when Lily tapped on his shoulder.

“I think it would be safer if you stayed in the van for this one.”

He gave no groan in protest, nor celebration for not going. He just twisted up his lips and nodded.

She turned around and locked into conversation with Jose and David. He waited there anxiously, barely twitching. He blinked when they arrived at the complex. She lived in room eleven B. As he looked through the heat-seeking goggles, he saw her with something in her hand... A gun!

“Guys, she's armed.” He said, alarmed.

They looked at him.

“Are you sure?” Lily asked.

“Yeah. Positive.”

They all sighed in unison.

Then they all got out of van, except for Chase.

The three law-enforcers quietly climbed the stairs. On Lily's signal, they busted through the apartment door.

“Hands up! Drop the gun!” She yelled at Mrs. Trey.

Instead, she ran oward the window, shooting rapidly until it completely shattered. Then in perfect formation, she did a perfect dive out of it.

Lily groaned and ran back down the stairs.

She couldn't find her anywhere, so she ran off into the forest.

She came back an hour later empty handed. Everyone else sighed. They loaded back up in the van.

“Bad news, Chase. We couldn't get her.” Jose said.

Silence.

“Chase?” She looked back there.

Chase wasn't there.

There was a handwritten note in his chair. It said:

I've got your detective. And if you want him back, you'll let me escape.

I'll put him in Grand Central Park if you want to take me up.

Just call me on my cell. And you'll get your precious Detective Chase back.
