in the middle of the road, staring at a pretty bird
It starts out as a pretty normal movie. Meet the characters, watch them go around for a bit, talk to a few people, and then fall off a bridge and die.
Wait. What?
Beetleguise is an older movie, but it's done by some people that I'll bet plenty of kids today will recognize. To give you a basic feel for the movie (as if the falling of a bridge thing didn't do that already) it was directed by the same guy who did The Nightmare Before Christmas and Alice and Wonderland (the 2010 version).
Basically, it's about ghosts, but these are the weirdest ghosts you'll ever meet. The bewildered "newly dead" couple seem to be the only normal ones. And the weirdest of all is named Beetleguise. (or Beetlejuice).
He's twisted, perverted, moldy-looking, and, to cap it all off, played by the same guy who played the Joker in Batman. He's also the newly dead couple's only hope of getting rid of the living family that just moved into their home. For obvious reasons, neither of the pair is too happy with the idea of accepting his help. So they sort of have to choose the lesser of two evils, whichever one that is.
Along the way they are helped by the Goth daughter of the living couple, Lydia. I don't know who plays her, but she's good.
Upside of the movie: The acting is great. The supporting characters are better than the main characters (both in acting and development) but everyone did a good job. Also, the soundtrack is really something. Extra points for the warped world created in this movie, and the Harry Belefonte music, which was fun despite having almost nothing to do with the story.
Downside of the movie: My biggest problem was with the ending. A certain character gets very out of character, and the whole twisted feel was sort of ruined.
