The Giver is probably one of my all time favorites. It's about a boy named Jonas who lives in a community that is way different from the real world. There is a naming ceremony, no one can see color, and the children acquire jobs at age 12. Jonas has been singled out and selected for the job of receiver of memories, someone who bears the truth about the community. Why there are no animals, why snow is only a tall tale. And most of all, what really happens at the infant nurturing center. Soon, it is up to Jonas to save his adopted baby brother, Gabe, before he is realesed from the clan, before he leaves Jonas and his family.
This book is great, and you should also read the sequels, The messenger and Gathering blue. Lois Lowry is a fantastic and chilling author.

I haven't read the sequels yet, but the Giver was good. If you're an older reader and you like the Giver, you'd probably like The Cure too. I'm not sure who it's by, I found it in the library. It was a lot like the Giver, but longer and for more mature readers.
