in Kansas
May 22nd, 2003
A stony silence between the two, broken by nothing.
In its hatred filled nothingness, hearts are on fire.
And somewhere in the night, a child screams,
His parents are dying.
Why does this happen?
No one knows.
A girl is yelling at her mother, who claims her anger
in the name of love.
A boy trusts no one, he was put down by his no-good father.
Friends have fights, children die.
Why does this happen?
No one knows.
He does drugs, she sits and smokes.
Someone, somewhere, dies on dope.
A gun is fired, rain is falling.
Lightning flashes across the sky, and thunder calls.
A fire is started, blazing up, a dog is howling,
At an unseen stalker.
Sirens scream, nothing's right. Life is misery.
Why does this happen?
No one knows.
Hearts are on fire.
