Nigeria, Africa- September 23, 1664

Clink…Clank…Clack…Clink…Clank…

The wind howled in pain through the petite Nigerian hut as Atnya lied on his little small straw mat.

Cold wind swept around him, poking fun. Something seemed different that night, but Atnya didn’t know what. The night seemed colder than any other night his family ever had in Nigeria. Was something wrong?

Beside him, Antya’s mother, father, and little sister slept peacefully. Atnya sensed something was wrong; he had a feeling deep in his gut. While thinking, Atnya thought he heard the sound of muffled voices. “Surely I must have been imagining,” he said to himself. The Nigerian boy, who was 14, started to peer at the door. Were there people outside his home?

“Brother?” said a little voice. Atnya peered behind him. “Kiesha? You’re awake too?” asked Atnya. “We are too!” said two other voices in unison. Atnya’s father and mother were staring at Kiesha and him.

“I was just having a bad feeling,” said Atnya shivering. “We were too,” said his sister, mother, and father.

Suddenly, there was and earsplitting and thunderous rapping at the door. Kiesha held Atnya tight. Very tight. “Oh no!” said his parents holding each other. Then, the door fell down and two men were standing at the doorway, with handcuffs. “GET THEM!” screamed one of the men. In a blink of an eye, the men seized Atnya and his family and handcuffed. The two white men dragged the family out the door, and out to the dock, which led to the big Atlantic Ocean. Other families were being dragged to and were crying.

Atnya and his family were dunked into the boat, and were chained down, along with other families. People were crying, sobbing, and wailing for freedom. But the white men had no mercy.

When the entire village was on the boat and chained, the ship began to sail. Sail to where? Atnya didn’t know where, but he knew wherever, it was going to be ghastly.
