Dear Diary,

I watched the Sampsons start to load their wagon today. Well not really load it just

stretch the buckskin over the hoops. Samantha got a letter from her Uncle Levy from California. It told about the watermelons as big as newborn calfs and pumpkins larger then, well, anything I suppose. He told of wonderful fishing, warm waters, and land by the acres being sold. Perhaps that's why Mr.Sampson decided to up and leave Wisconsin. Though I don't know why anyone would want to leave. I didn't ask though diary. Mother says ladies aren't supposed to ask absurd questions, like why someone was to leave. Mother, a very religous person, said without a doubt, that whenever someone asked about another persons reasons for doing something the answer was "It's their destiny". No questions asked.

Sincerely,

Emily Malia Bishop

Dear Diary,

Today was a wonderful day! In the morning Mrs.Sampson decided to let Samantha and I have a bit of time alone. She packed a beautiful picnic, full of ham, apples, cornbread, fish, an even molassas! She said that none of it would make the trip out of territory so she told us to enjoy it and not waste a drop. We went into the meadow and ate to our hearts content. After such a meal Samantha and I took some baskets and went to pick strawberries. We collected them and then brought them to Samantha's house for Mrs.Sampson to bake into a cobler. Soon after we went to the brook that led into the meadow. The water looked cool and refreashing so I took my ribbons off my braids. I tied the sides of my dress onto my legs and went wading in the water. It was fablouse! Mrs.Sampson called Samantha in to help with the wash and I was walking home, braiding my hair back up as I went, when someon pulled me into the bushes. I started to scream but a hand placed itself over my mouth. I turned....Michael! He gestured to be quiet and led me into the forest. He came to an opening just outside my secret rock! He told me that this was his specail place. I had no heart to tell him that I already knew of the place so I silenced myslelf. I had yet another picnic with Amelia knowing nothing of our excursion.

Sincerely,

Emily Malia Bishop
