Melissa looked out the window at the street. The snow had sloshed up onto the curb and turned brown and as the cars passed it would get dirtier and dirtier. The snow on the Bransons front lawn was untouched and clean, even the driveway was left alone. And the salt that Mrs.Baker had left outside on her walkway to keep the ice off was blowing away. Everthing made Melissa gloomy. She sighed and turned around to face her untidy room and as she looked once more outside she saw a little girl and her father making a snowman outside. She sighed again and slowly lowered the shades. "Why me?" She wondered outloud.

Melissa's mother, Anne, was making dinner downstairs when she heard Melissa come down. She flopped into a chair and sighed making it seem as if the whole world was sad. "What's wrong honey?" She asked sympatheticly as she set out the good china. "What do you think?" Melissa's tone changed from lonely to angry and Anne let and eyebrow slide down her forehead to make Melissa sit up a little straighter. "I know that it's hard honey but your fathers not gone forever". She took out some forks and handed them to Melissa. She got up. "But it's worse, you and dad dont love eachother anymore. He wont be around for Christmas." Melissa began to set the table. Then she stopped for a minute. "Mom why are we putting the good china out. I'm not that sad." Anne stopped taking out glasses for a minute and put them onto the table."And why are there 3 glasses?" Melissa's brother and father had moved away that summer. "Honey, one of my colleagues is coming over for supper. His-" "What?" screetched Melissa. "He?" "I cant believe it!" "Melissa honey" "No! Just....just....mmmmrrggg" Melissa growled fustrated and ran up the stairs and slammed the door to her room
