in California
April 27th, 2002
On April 4, 2002, we went to San Jose Historical Park by bus. We visited lots of places there. We first went to the Chinese Temple. The docent said that the building was only a replica. He told us that some people tore down the original temple and hid the pieces in the park. Then they got the pieces and built the replica.
Second, we went to the doctor’s/dentist’s office. They had to drill their teeth without painkiller. They also took operations that could make you sick for six days!
Third, we went to the printer’s office. The printing job was hard to do because they had to place each letter block in a placer, and then either roll the ink to stamp the sentence they placed or they use the printing press. They got some ink, and then they put a piece of paper. They paddled with their feet and then the letters were printed.
Fourth, we went to the Umburger House, which was small. They had to get the water from the well and they took a bath in this order: father, mother, the older child, the younger child and then, the baby.
After all that, we took the trolley around the park. We took a peek at other things too like the gas station. The gas station said, “Assorted gas only.” We also took a peek at an old fashioned steam engine, and we saw a fabric ghost inside the hood of it.
Last, we went to the Japanese Friendship Garden. We saw lots of fishes named Koi. We also saw little tadpoles. After that, we went all the way back to the bus and left. I think our field trip was fun.
