PROLOGUE

KYRA could not sleep. She tossed and turned in her bed, until finally she was
convinced sleep was not coming. She walked to the window and opened it. A blast of cold, wintry air met her face. Kyra shivered, and looked up at the sky. Billions of silvery stars studded the black night sky.
Suddenly, Kyra heard a shrill cry pierce the night's silence. She forze, eyes wide with fear. She turned her head to the sleeping body of her youngest sister, Emyael. Kyra stood there for a few minutes; the sound did not return. Finally convinced that nothing serious had happened, the young girl closed the window and went back to bed. Her heavy eyelids drooped, then closed. They did not open until morning.
Kyra was helping Emyael and Tora fix breakfast. "Did you hear it?" chattered Tora noisily. She was mixing somethin tgether; Kyra suspected pancakes. "It scared me so that I jumped clean out of my skin!" Tora said. Emyael laughed. "The only thing to hear," she paused, and ate a strawberry, "Is your snoring." She snickered. Tora stomped her foot in protest. "Oh, no it wasn't! It was something else!" The way Tora said that made Kyra's hair stand on end. She shivered. There was nothing to be heard, true, but Tora slept in an entirely different room. And it sounded like a cry, definately not a snore. Kyra began to say something, but stopped. For once, it would be better to stay out of this argument.
"There was nothing else to hear exept your loud, obnoxious snoring," Emyael snickered again. Tora set the bowl on the nearest shelf and wiped her hands on her apron. "Well, for your information, it was not a snore, it sounded much like a cry, or perhaps a scream," Tora said. Her teeth were clenched, as well as her fists; a true sign she was about to lose her temper. "Oh! Did you hear that? I think it's a dragon! Help! Run! Aaaaaah!" Emyael laughed and ran around. She did not think dragons were real, though many people of her villiage did. Emyael flailed her arms high in the air. More giggles. "That's it!" Tora said, and she flew at her sister. The laughter soon turned to shrieks and cried from Emyael. Kyra darted into the fight. She pulled away an angry Tora and a sobbing Emyael. Just then, in came their mother. "Mama! Mama!" cried Emyael. She gripped the ruffled skirt, and dried her wet eyes on it. Tora grumbled, then laughed. She expected Kyra, her older sister to join in.
But she wasn't paying attention.
Something was coming; something they hadn't seen or heard in the midst of the fight. And the something was coming toward them! "Hide!" Kyra screamed, terrrified.Emyael, Tora, Kyra, and Mother rushed into their pantry. A shrill cry; the same as the one Kyra and Tora had heard last night sounded again. Then, just as before, all was silent. Except for, Kyra thought, the faint sound of beating wings.

Stay tuned for Chapter One.
