Book One
~Prologue~
From the tallest tower of the palace, you could see all of Keryn. Standing in the tower one day, a young girl watched the carriages cross the drawbridge for the ball. She sighed, grateful to be home. Her name was Janine in Common Speech, Ireth in Elven Tongue. Janine was the seamstress; no one would dance with her.
She sighed again, and picked up the book of blank parchment. Long ago her mother had given it to her, with a note saying:
My Dear Janine,

Your Loving Mother,
Joanna
Janine sighed, once more, and picked up her quill pen. Then, she began to write.
