Skye, ch. 3

in a state of constant wonder

December 29th, 2005

Zak shook me by the shoulders. "What did you do?" He yelled. Shocked, and shook my head. "I-I don't know," I replied. Zak sank down onto the snow covered ground, head lying on his chest.

"I need to tell you something," he said. As I heard his voice I was scared. This wasn't my brother, and as I looked at Zak, he didn't even look like my twin! "What?" I asked him. Zak stood up, brown eyes full of pain.

"I've been here before. This land is Flaria, ruled by Wolves, Tigers, and even the rare Dragon. The mountain men, like Grogrith are some of the stupidest henchmen for Flaria's enemy: Empress Quileya- but they have power," he said.

His blond hair, formerly short, was shoulder length. Zak was taller than me, and always had been, but not like this. He was at least a head taller!I shrugged again, desperately trying to hide my fear of this strange place where mountains talked and took little kids.

"So, what? I mean, can't we just find Zane and Katie and leave?" I asked Zak. He shook his head.I stared into his brown eyes, still hainted with pain and grief.

"No. You see, I am your twin, in a way, and unrelated, in another way. Remember when we were two and I almost drowned?" he asked me. I shook my head. "Well, for some reason I came here. To Flaria. I was found and taken care of, and then suddenly I was back.

"I grew here, in another life. If you remember I was in a coma for a bit, and was our age when I returned to our world. Before I left Flaria, I made a deal with Empress Quilenya. I would bring my youngest siblings here and let her have them. She revealed to me that Katie and Zane, if not brought here, would be killed in a car crash. So, although they weren't even born, I felt as if I knew them. I made the deal and woke up."

I stared at him, once again, green eyes burning with anger and distrust. My own brother! He had made a deal with some evil person! Whether it was earth of Flaria, evil was evil. Zak saw my eyes and quickly added to his story.

"But she wasn't evil then. I mean, ever since we came here I've been getting strange messages from Flarian friends, warning me. By the time I could react, that monster Grogrtih was gone."

It was my turn. I took my brothers shoulders and shook him. "Don't you see? We have to save Zane and Katie!"
