One day, a kitten was mewing on a doorstep. She was cream with a black star on her chest, and she had warm, brown eyes. The kitten's name was Arissa. She was a stray and she needed a home or she would die. It was winter and she was starving and cold.

Finally, a young girl named Liza heard a strained and worn out mewing. The girl was lonely. No one took care of her. Her older sister Mary was only fifteen, and she took care of Liza all the time. Liza's parents had been missing for three years. Nobody believed they would come back anymore. The only one who believed was Liza. Liza went to the door and saw the kitten. She started to tremble. She had had a cat when her parents had been home. It had run away when it stopped getting big, fancy cat meals like it did from her parents. Liza had loved that cat more than anything. She had been devestated when her cat, Kate, had left.

Arissa allowed the girl to pick her up and stroke her. The girl looked about eight. She also looked tired, hungry, aand cold. As the girl brought Arissa into the house, she realized why the girl was cold. There was no heating. The girl's family must not have enough money to pay for the heat, Arissa thought. As the girl opened the fridge to get the kitten some milk and a snack, Arissa also realized why she was hungry. There was next to nothing in there.

After a few days, Arissa realized that there were no obvious parents here. Even though she had been allowed to stay, it took food of the girls' plates. Now they looked even hungrier. Arissa felt like a burden. She decided to do something to help Liza and Mary.
