For the few moments after I knocked on the door I don't think I took one breath. My heart didn't seem to beat. My eyes didn't blink. I don't think I could have moved if I had wanted to. Everything was quiet, except for the sound of barking dogs inside the house.
I waited a second and then knocked again. Now, besides the dogs, I could hear kids crying inside. I wondered if this meant that she had children. If so, then why did she give me up for adoption and not them? Maybe now she had her life straitened up, so she would be able to keep her new kids. Soon, I heard someone yelling inside the house. I wondered if it could be her. I got more and more nervous as each moment passed.
I knocked again. Finally a woman opened up the door with a quick thrust and said rudely, "What?" I looked at the woman. She had pale, sunburned skin, messy, blond hair, and an angry look on her face. I wondered if this could be my mom. She was about the right age. For the most part we looked nothing like each other, except for our eyes. When I looked into her eyes it was like gazing in a miror.
It took me a moment to finally speak, but when I did I was prepared. "Hello, Miss. My name is Marsha Hammett. Are you Jillian Snyder?"
"Yeah. Why?"
"I, umm, need to speak with you for a minute."
"Why?"
"Well, perhaps if I told you that my real name is Jane Snyder you would know."
The woman thought for a minute and then said, "I don't know any Jane Snyder. You must be looking for another Jill Snyder, but I'm not her."
"Miss, did you give up a child for adoption before."
"Yeah. W..." She didn't finish her sentance. Instead she broke down crying. I knew that she knew who I was. "I...I...have to go now. It was very nice meeting you. Bye," Jill said. Then she slammed the door shut.
I couldn't believe it. I just stood there, dumbfounded. Soon, I knocked again, and again, and again.
She still wouldn't answer it. I could hear a kid yelling, "Mom! Hurry up and get the stupid door!"
Finally, Jill opened the door up a little bit. "I'm sorry, but I'm very busy right know. Would you mind leaving now?"
A heavy sigh came out of my mouth and then I said, "Only if you tell me a better time to come back."
"Well...umm...uhh...tomorrow! Yes. Come back tomorrow. I have to go now. Bye."
Well, I had finally met my mother. As confused as I was, at least I knew who she was. Somehow, I felt more complete. I finally felt like I was whole.
