"Yawn," Jasmine Chen opened her eyes. Where was she? She was lying on something that felt like-feathers! She looked around. She was on a huge Barn Owl's back! Right next to her was her best friend, Dawn Chen. The owl turned towards them, and, seeing they were awake, began to speak:
"We are being destroyed by the humans. You two must help. Here, see what they do. Our spy has been here, watching. His name is Grandel."
The two girls looked down. Below them was their schoolyard! In the yard were two boys, Jerry Lee (Jerry L) and Allen. They were shooting stones from slingshots at a Spotted Owl. It dodged expertly, laughing all the while.
"Excuse me," asked Dawn. "but why can we understand you?" The owl just smiled at them and turned. It began to fly towards a place that was the owls' secret base. But Jasmine turned one last time, and saw Grandel struck from behind by a stone. He began to fall...
