“Hey Maxy. What’cha doin’?” I stepped outside into the cold morning air and in-hailed deeply. Max, my mutt, was wagging his tail and bouncing around wildly. I puffed out my air and I watched as it cut through the coldness like steam.

“WHOOF!” Max bellowed. He wasn’t a huge dog, but he wasn’t small either. And his voice was loud and mighty. For some reason he always reminded me of a police dog.

Suddenly, I heard a bang and then felt a slight rumble. ‘What in the world was that?!’ I had never felt such a small quake!

“Jinny! Jinny! Did you feel that?! Did you feel that?!” My baby brother had come running out of the opened screen door and had tackled me with a frightened hug.

“Yes, yes, I heard and felt it. I thought it was you.” I said playfully, rubbing the top of his head. “Now, you’re only 7 and you’re already getting up at 6:30 am! What have I told you about getting some sleep!” I replied.

“But Jinny! If I wake up at 6:30 and you wake me up at 7:00 it’s no fair because I can’t go back to sleep and I can’t just sit in bed all morning!” he whined.

“Alright, but if mom asks tell her that I insisted on you going back to sleep, alright?” I told him.

“Alright. But - what do you think that shake was?” he asked.

“That QUAKE was probably just some small earthquake.” I explained. But for some reason the quake felt too small and I had heard a rumbling noise right before it happened. I put off the thought of the quake and went inside the house. But after today, I would learn, that that choice wasn’t such a good idea after all. . .
