I rushed inside to tell my mother and father. "Mother, Father!" My mother came in from the kitchen, "What is it Cheyenne?" Breathing heavily I replied, "A wolf was outside howling!" She sighed and kind of slumped, "Cheyenne, you know there aren't any wolves left. Now, maybe it was a dog or that train that goes by." Adriel was listening in, "A train? Mom, come on. A wolf howl and a train whistle don't sound anything alike." My mother rolled her eyes, always hating to argue with her youngest daughter, "The train is miles away Adriel, it could have sounded like it."
My father came into the room. "Now what's all this about a wolf?" I explained, "I heard a wolf outside howling!" You can't expect my mother to believe it, but my father has a certain way about him that won't allow him to pass up anything, no matter how ridiculous it sounds. He had a face like he was interested, "Oh really. Did you try howling back?" I replied, "Of course not Father, that could have drawn him towards us!" He sighed, "How many times do I have to explain to you children, all the scary tales of wolves your mother told you was a bushel of nonsense." He looked at mother with annoyance.
Father and I stayed up most of the night discussing the wolf howl. He is very good at pretending to be interested in something, but he wouldn't talk away most of the hours just to make me feel like he was interedted. He loved wolves, as did I, and had been trying to come up with a way to bring them back, but no dogs had the proper DNA to make a wolf, and he had hunted for remaining wolves, but had not succeeded.
He then said something that I never expected, "Well, it sounds to me like you're telling the truth. So, how about tonight we pack and leave to hunt out that wolf hmm? We'll leave a note for your mother so she can't object to you going since you'll already be gone, and if we find nothing in three months, we'll return home. What do you say?" I was very surprised and immediatley aggreed. "Of course, I'd love to go! Wow, three months is a long time." He nodded, "Well, wolves are elusive creatures and if there is any left, there won't be but a couple, and that's if we're lucky."
So we packed and headed out at one in the morning.
