Sorrowful, I continued my journey to the west, scanning every inch of the mountain as best as I could. I couldn't seem to think up a good explination for what had happened that night. I was walking along, thankfully noticing the darkness lighten up, a sign the darkness period would soon be over. Suddenly, I heard the sqwak from above me again. I looked up and saw a bird high above me. He flew closer and closer until I could make out a huge black bird with white wing tips. I then noticed his white head. I gasped.
"There's no way it could be an eagle." I whispered under my breath. My mouth dropped open as I recalled the fact that Father's favorite animal was the majestic bald eagle. I then thought a comforting thought that he might be watching over me. The journey wasn't so grim as the bird followed me everywhere I traveled. One day, I finally came to the tops of one of the mountains. I almost cried for the beauty of what I saw at the top. The eagle flew down and landed on a rock a few feet away from me and gazed at the scenery.
It was morning and the darkness period had passed, this being the first morning of light. The first morning was always the prettiest. The pink and blue clouds were below me now, and mountain tops all around me glittered and gleamed in the sunlight. Snow slowly fell and shone like diamonds as they passed in the sun's rays. I took in the beauty of the moment and then descended down the mountain.
I was walking as carefully as possible, when I slipped on ice and slid down on my rear at about fifty miles an hour.I thought to myself, "It's all down hill from here." I saw the eagle fly a little towards the left. I had a little control over which direction I went, and followed the eagle to the left. He was in a cedar tree, waiting for me to slide towards him. Below him was a low branch. I reached out and grabbed it, jerking myself to a hault.
I looked at the eagle as he flew towards the bottom of the mountain, urging me to hurry up down the mountain.
