I couldn't take it; I lifted my bedroom window and climbed out of the house. Raven was outside and I put my hand up to signal to her to be quiet. In the woods, one day, I put my hand up to tell Raven to not move because I thought I heard something and she became quiet. She wasn't taught to do it, she just did it willingly. I climbed onto Umar's older brother's four-wheeler who was off to college in Montana. I revved it up and headed off onto the dirt road. I had runaway before, it should be a snap this time.
Right? Wrong. Suddenly, the four-wheeler died. "What the?" I was turning the key over and over. The person looked through the window. I expected the person to come outside, but they never did. About two minutes of frustration and the cops were at the house. "Oh shit." I whispered and jumped off the four-wheeler, preparing to run through the field and escape. The cop car stopped and a man pointed a gun at me. "Freeze!" I knew they wouldn't hesistate to shoot, so I stopped and they ran over, handcuffing me.
An old woman with long, gray hair came out of the house. She may have been old and had gray hair, but she looked pretty. Her hair was a silvery color and she looked about fifty, not her real age I guessed. "Now gentlemen, that won't be necessary. Just put her in my car." They did as she said like they were her dogs. She said a few more things to the family and left. As we were driving away, they all waved and I gave Mr. and Mrs. Connor the finger.
The lady saw me and said, "Now now Safire. That won't be necessary. The adoption agency isn't so bad." She smiled and for some reason, she made me less upset. She seemed really nice, but she didn't and would never get it. "I don't give that much of a damn about the adoption agency. It's those jackass people who just gave me back." I folded my arms and watched the trees go by out the window. "I'm sure they've already explained their reason. It's not that they don't love you, they just can't possibly keep you. They cried and yelled themsleves to death on the phone."
She chuckled, "I spent nearly three hours on the phone arguing with them. I didn't want to take you away any more than your parents, I mean the Connors, did. It's just my job and I absolutley have to stick with it. I mean, even if I quit so I won't have to do it, they'll just get someone else to." It was a queit car ride the rest of the way. Then we arrived at the adoption agency. It was three years until someone considered adopting me. I was shocked when they actaully did. I was even more shocked to see it was the man and woman I had seen so many times in my dreams who were adopting me.
