Miles Davis:
Trumpeter and Composer
Miles Davis was a trumpeter and composer. He had FOUR wives!!! He also had three kids whose names where Cheryl, Gregory, and Miles the fourth. Son of a dentist and violin player, Miles grew up in east St. Louis, Illinois.
Unlike many African Americans, Miles grew up with a safe childhood. His parents where so happy that he was interested in music, they gave him his first trumpet on his thirteenth birthday. Since he was so happy when he played his trumpet, he played for hours every day.
He joined his first band, Eddie Randel’s Blue Devils, in 1941. When still a teenager, Miles got to play with two of his jazz heroes, Dizzie Gillespie and Charlie Parker.
When Miles was eighteen, he enrolled into the Julliard School of Music in New York City to study classical music, yet his passion was jazz. Miles played his jazz differently. Most jazz musicians played hard and throbbing, but he played smooth and soft. He was an amazing jazz player. When he first played in front of a crowd, they knew he would be a jazz legend!
