Soon after her recovery, Marie-Ange had a sudden desire to go see her only friend, Corrine.
Corrine wasn’t a normal kid. She was a Mist too, and every time she felt the need to give a hug, she burst out in tears. It was very hard for her not to be able to hug her BEST friend, especially because she was the only one left living in her family. Her family had died of evaporation. It was a sad thing for her, but she always had Marie-Ange and Daniel to comfort her.
“Daniel! Je vais chez Corrine pour un sejour!! Je reviens demain!!” she called to Daniel.
“Non! Marie-Ange! C’est trop dangereux. Des personnes vont te voir!!!” Daniel called back. Marie-Ange always disobeyed Daniel, but being seen was horrible for Mists. No one knew about Mists except Mists themselves. To be seen by a human was very dangerous for a Mist. They could be found!
She didn’t listen to Daniel and she left for Corrine’s immedeatly. It was winter outside, which was good weather for Mists. Nice and cool.
Just as she was walking up to Corrine’s house, a little girl, around age five yelled, “He!! Pourquoit est tu rose?” Marie-Ange turned around to see a small redheaded girl tugging at her shirt. She stared at the child and tried to get her tiny hand off of her. Human’s hands can be deadly, because they carry so much heat. She was very scared.
Meanwhile, Daniel was back at the house, cleaning the dishes and singing a French folk song that Marie-Ange had taught him. Marie-Ange knew so much about French culture. He wiped his hands as he called for Marie-Ange to come dry the dishes.
“Marie-Ange! Viens et essuie les forchettes et touts cela avant qu’ils essuient tout seuls!” There was no answer. He called again. No answer. Ugh, thought Daniel. Marie-Ange always goes out, even when I say it isn’t safe! How stubborn!
The child was still pulling at her shirt. “Arrete, enfant! Il n’y a pas aucun chose special ici!"
Translations:
"Daniel! I'm going to Corrine's for a sleepover! I'm coming back tomorrow!"
"No, Marie-Ange! It's too dangerous! People will see you!"
"Hey! Why are you pink?"
"Marie_Ange! Comme and dry these forks and stuff before they dry themselves!!"
"Stop, kid! There's nothing special here!"
