Taylor lay sobbing on the shore, as the tide swept ever closer. The water swept ever closer, bringing it’s cargo of hope. Taylor stood up, and spat towards the destroyed statue. He turned and behind him, a ship washed up on the shore. It was gleaming white, and had a gigantic screen on the front. It had a small door on the side that slid open. From it a figure in a spacesuit rose out. Nova looked at Taylor in a confused manor, and he shook his head. She pointed over his shoulder, and he saw a person in a spacesuit walking towards the statue of liberty. They slid in through one of the many tears in its husk, and vanished inside the structure. Nova went to follow the mystery person but Taylor stopped her. He pointed to the spaceship, and she looked confused. He tuned around and to his surprise, there was nothing out in the sea, but a few barnacle covered rocks. He walked a few steps into the waves to where his last chance had been, but it was gone. He sobbed, and lay down in the sea. The waves were washing over him, but he didn’t care. The ocean obscuring his vision, his tears mingled with the waves. He didn’t flinch as the tide passed over his head. Nova, who had heard enough speech to be able to attempt a new human-old human cross language, called out.
‘Whgo y?!’ She cried to the waves ‘Coba meck!’ She sped into the now raging sea, searching for him. Even if she only found a body, she would be happy. ‘Tacoba lomeck r!!!’ She cried out. But she continued looking, until suddenly she started to sink. She slowly got pulled into the wet sand, and the sea grew ever closer to her struggling head. She held her breath, as she was gradually pulled under the sea bed. She saw a fish swim by… then nothing.

*
She awoke with people standing over her. They were both men dressed in highly ceremonial clothing. They were wearing robes, one dark purple, and the other a pale pink, and had thick black beards.
‘She must have fallen through the time hole said the younger of the two (the one in pink clothing). The older smiled
‘I just take them to the boss; he was worried it might be an ape.’ The younger leaned towards Nova.
‘Can you talk?’ She understood. He sounded like Taylor. She tried to talk to him.
‘Wefr reie nd?’ she asked. The one in the purple robes turned to the one in pink.
‘What did she say?’
‘No idea, what do you think?’
‘You tell me, you’re the translator.’
‘I need more than three words to work out a language!’ He cried. ‘Let’s just take her along, and then I can do a few tests.’ Concluded the one dressed in pink. The purple one offered Nova a hand. She refused it, and pulled herself up. She followed them down several stone passages, there footsteps echoing of the damp walls. She was taken into a room, and shown pictures of things, and asked about them. After a while the pink robed man stood up. ‘I think I understand.’ He said. ‘Let’s take her to the boss.
‘Finally!’ Cried the one in purple, rolling his eyes.
They walked Nova down a long passage. She and the pink-robed man exchanged conversation back and forth. She told him where she came from, and what had happened. He told here that she had fallen through a gap in time, a small time portal on the sea bed. But then they reached a giant set of doors, caved into the stone. The purple man pushed the door, and it slowly opened, revealing a man sitting on a throne, wearing White robes. All around the walls were pictures of apes being killed, calved horribly into the stone. They had twisted features that made strange shadows flicker around the torch-lit room. The man had a beard, and looked old. He peered down at her, through his monocle.
‘What do we have here then?’ He said in a voice like a rusty hinge.
‘A human sir! Fell through the time hole.’ replied the man in purple.
‘Good. Now, are you or are you not, an ape guard.’ said the old man.
‘Yes, I am’
‘Now, tell me, what is your job?’
‘To stop apes getting in’
‘And is this an ape, you have brought to me?’
‘No, but…’
‘I DON’T CARE; GET BACK TO YOUR POST!!!!!!’ Bellowed the man, with a voice of a thousand thunderstorms. He turned to Nova. ‘You look like a girl I once new, but she must be long dead by now.’ He said, his wrinkles lined with sadness. Nova whispered to the man in pink, who she now knew was called John. John said to the king.
‘Sir, she wants to know if there is a way back.’
‘BACK?! BACK?! No-one gets back from here, or I would be long gone. But I suppose I don’t know were to go to…’ He trailed off. But then he started mumbling equations. He looked up. ‘Bring in my team, I have a proposition.’ The doors at the far end of the hall flew open, and several people walked in. All in light blue or light green robes, but one in yellow. ‘Take the girl for an examination, and then find her a post.’ said the man to John.
‘B... But I’m just a translator…’
‘Fine…’ The man clapped his hands and a human in dark red robes, with a breast plate on top walked in.
‘Take the girl for an examination, and then find her a post.’ The white robed man repeated to the new person. ‘Oh, and bring the translator.’

After a long walk down another damp corridor, listening to the human in the red winging about how solders shouldn’t have to do this kind of thing and a quick examination from an orange robed man, she was brought to a room filled with robes.
‘The lighter the colour, the better at your job you are. When you are the best you get white, with a stripe of your colour. There are different colours for different jobs.’ explained John, as the man in red looked longingly at a white uniform with a red stripe. ‘Red is for the army, Orange is for a medical person, Yellow is for a technical genus, or a shop keeper. Green is for if you work with the mind, Blue is a dictator, purple is for an ape guard, and pink is for a translator. White with no stripe is the boss.’ He recited from memory. ‘I will probably give you a dark pink, and make you my assistant. What to do think?’
‘Sogr unea dst!’
‘Great, let’s start now!’

He ran her through the 7 basic languages, in his office. As he spoke, she looked around the cave that he called home. There were cracked parchment maps hanging on hooks, and shelves filled with scrolls and books. In the centre of the room there was a big roughly carved oak desk that needed a new coat of varnish. The desk was covered with papers written on in many languages. There was a half open book, filled with strange symbols and squiggles. Nova remembered the night many moons ago when she was in the cage, and Taylor was with her. She was scared, and he soothed her with his strange words. She wept a tear for him, and swore she would get back. Back to the beach she would go, and find him at any costs. If she found him dead, then she could have a burial, and let her mind be at rest. She shifted out of her thoughts, when the door opened. Through it came a man dressed in dark red.
‘AN APE GOT PAST THE DEFENCES!’ he cried, and ran onto the next room. John looked terrified. He pushed Nova back, and pulled a shelf against the door. He then proceeded to push his desk in front of the door, swearing loudly every time he got a splinter. When he was done, he sat down, exhausted and bleeding on the floor. Nova ran forward to him, and dabbed his hands with and ancient parchment. Suddenly the door exploded, and an ape rode through on a horse, he had black fur, and was in black armour. He was carrying a rifle, which he aimed at John. He grinned, showing his yellow monkey teeth, covered in bits of green.
‘Don’t move.’ He said ‘I know you can’t talk, no human can, but you can probably understand this gun.’ John looked confused and terrified.
‘I can talk.’ This confused the ape, and distracted it for a second. A solder in a white uniform, with a red stripe was creeping down the corridor behind them, with a rifle. He saw Nova, and put his fingers to his lips. She nodded. The ape squeezed his finger on the trigger, and then a gut reaching bang echoed around the room. John fell backwards. Nova cried out, and rushed to him. She sobbed, but they were sobs of happiness. He had only fainted, because of the shock of being so close to death. The gunshot came from the solder’s gun. The ape fell off his horse, and onto the floor.

When he was recovered, John explained to Nova about the time hole. ‘It doesn’t go from one time to another.’ He explained. ‘People come here from the past and the future. If two people come down the hole, they may arrive 50 seconds apart, or 50 years apart. This ape must have come from a time before Taylor was found, that’s why he didn’t know about talking humans.’
‘Tahe lore r?’ She asked with hope in her brown eyes. John knew the love she felt for Taylor, because he felt it once, but then he fell thought the time hole. His love must have died years ago. His only hope was to try to control the time hole, and get back through it. After he worked out how to get through, he must hope to get there before the past him left, and find his sweet heart. He and Nova shared a common goal, and they must achieve it together.

*

She persuaded him to go to the record room, to try and find a record room. She had had an idea: Taylor had come through the time-hole first, and may have been here before her, or he may come after. Then John looked up from a scroll, confused.
‘No, it can’t be…’ He whispered. His thoughts were interrupted when a solder in dark red, walked into the records room.
‘The boss wishes to see the girl.’ He demanded.
‘But I’m her translator!’ Protested John ‘How will he know what she says?’
‘He told me you’d say that.’
‘And?’
‘He says he understands her quite well.’ replied the solder, in a final kind of way. He marched Nova out of the room, towards the hall containing the leader of the underground city. The guards pushed open the great doors. Nova walked towards were the throne was the last time she had visited the king, there was now a great bed, with an orange robed man standing by it’s side. Lying in the bed was the frail king. As she edged nervously towards the kings bed, she could see his frail face shrouded in flickering shadows. She knelt by his side, and he whispered to her in a croak of a voice,
‘I know who you are, and ware you come from.’ She looked at him curiously. ‘Taylor did not die.’ She looked at him in surprise.
‘Yoknhi uowm?!’ He grinned eerily.
‘You couldn’t talk before.’ He said, but then erupted into a fit of coughing. ‘I am dying, Nova.’ He said. Nova looked confused and opened her mouth to ask him something. ‘Yes I know your name.’ He smiled, ‘I have known it for years. I am Taylor.’ Nova stood up.
‘No’ she whispered. Her shocked face casting flickering shadows in the torchlight.
‘Come closer.’ He beckoned to her. ‘You gave me an idea on how to get back. There is a spaceship that has been built. Take it, and fly through the time hole. It is on the highest point in the hall in which you arrived, that is why we never reached it…’ She nodded ‘But now we can.’ She pointed to herself, confused. ‘Yes, you go. Take the translator, and go back to earth. Find a mate, get a family. Forget me.’ Nova shook her head, silent tears running down her face. ‘Good buy friend…’ Whispered Taylor into her ear, and then he lay limp. The light left his eyes, and he was gone.
‘Dole n’tav e!!!’ she cried. The doctor in orange robes bowed his head, and left. Nova was in the room for an hour, crying for a lost love. He had set her a task, and she would complete it. She ran past the hall, towards John’s office. She burst into his office, and explained the situation to him. He walked with her down the corridor, and the air was filled with urgency. They entered the room with the spaceship, and a red-robed human ran past them.
‘AN APE HAS ESCAPED!!!!!!’ He cried. Inside the room, Nova and John put on their spacesuits.
‘Ok, if we get separated, meet me inside the statue of liberty.’ Said john, and Nova nodded, in agreement.
‘Lele tsav e.’ she said the seriousness in her voice, also etched onto her face.
‘Yes, it’s now or never…’ Mumbled John as they entered the spacecraft. The spacecraft was gleaming white, and had a gigantic screen on the front. It had a small door on the side that slid open, to let them enter into its gleaming interior. There were many gleaming panels, and they strapped themselves in. The roof of the room opened, to reveal a giant hall. They rose up and up, higher, until a rip in the air swam into view. It looked like all the colour in the world was being sucked into the centre of the time hole. They flew towards it, into the unknown…

*

They swooped through the time hole, and out into the sky. John what shouting at the top of his voice, a huge grin on his face. Nova turned round as she heard a metallic clunk, from the back of the plane. She screamed a she saw an ape running towards her with a metal bar. It had a green costume, and a slim hair-covered face, contorted with rage. John looked up, and raised a pistol. The ape brought the bar down, at the same time as John pulled the trigger. The ape fell to the floor, and John slumped in his seat. The plane started to spiral out of control, and Nova tried to stop it crashing. The beach was growing ever closer, and she tried to gain control. She pressed a few buttons, but that did less than make a siren sound. When she hit another button, suddenly John and his chair ejected out of the pod, and flouted into the sea, further along from where a giant broken metal structure was towering high on the beach. The ship crashed into the sea, and the cockpit started to fill with water. She opened the door and ran onto the beach in her spacesuit. Behind her, the ship vanished into the time hole. She walked calmly over the beach, and slid through a tear in the husk of the metal structure, that looked strangely familiar. As she waited, she saw someone run into the sea, and start searching for something. She gasped. She was back to the start…
